Another Scoop at Scoopcamp 2014
On September 3rd/4th it was Scoopcamp time again! For the 6th year running, media network next Media Hamburg and German news agency dpa hosted one of Germany’s most influential events in the field of digital storytelling.
The conference’s focus is on new innovative content formats, emerging tools for storytelling and creation, as well as different organizational approaches to reach new audiences with compelling content.
The morning belonged to the keynote speakers ranging from Burt Herman of Storify to Ken Schwencke of the New York Times, both outlining the success and approaches behind their offers. This triggered interesting debates and discussions.
The afternoon was reserved for “hands-on” workshops. One of these was organized by our own Birgit Gray.
In cooperation with Pro7Sat1‘s Jens Doka, Birgit outlined and discussed developments regarding second screen services. This was partly based on the work we are carrying out in one of our research and development projects, namely SAM.
A clear highlight from a DW perspective was the hackathon, this year in its second edition. Programming and coding took place the day before the conference, while the results were presented and voted for by the audience on the conference day itself. The team (Milan Burgmann, Hannes Rohde, Thomas Bastian, all DW New Media and Daniela Woytewicz, WDR 1Live) under the lead of DW Innovation’s team captain Cosmin Cabulea repeated their success of the previous year: they won the first prize, the “scoop 2014” – a branded megaphone.
Their winning project idea: “The Mental News Map”, a newsgame that aims to attract those who otherwise are not that interested in standard news by offering content in a playful way. (The open source code including explanations as well as the game itself can be found here.)
DW Innovation’s second consecutive win led host Meinolf Ellers of dpa to joke about the hackathon trophy’s name: “It may now be necessary to re-name it to ‘Cosmophone'”, he said, handing over the award.
While it might be a bit early for that, the DW delegation returned “back to base” in Bonn and Berlin with their heads full of new ideas and their address books filled with many new and interesting contacts. Scoopcamp – we’ll be back, for more great experiences and maybe a hackathon hat-trick.
