DW and BBC to host “Global Inequalities Hackathon” at Global Media Forum
DW Research and Cooperation Projects is teaming up with BBC News Labs to organize a hackathon in the scope of DW’s upcoming annual Global Media Forum (GMF).
The renowned conference for journalists, media managers, tech experts, NGO representatives, artists, entrepreneurs, scientists, civil servants and politicians will take place at the World Conference Center and DW headquarters in Bonn from June 11th to June 13th. This year’s focus is on “Global Inequalites” — and we will of course take up the issue at our collaborative tech event.
More specifically, we imagine a hackathon dedicated to visualizing the lack of balance in social, economic, and political matters by using the latest concepts and tools in data-driven journalism (DDJ, Hackathon Track 1) and augmented reality (AR, Hackathon Track 2).
“We think it’s important to make the pressing issue of global inequalities more tangible and accessible, and we are thrilled to host a truly diverse crowd of creative people to come up with new ideas to tackle this challenge”, says Wilfried Runde, Head of Research and Cooperation Projects at DW.
The hackathon will start on June 11th at about 11h and end on June 13th in the early afternoon. Early morning and late night sprints are possible, but certainly not mandatory, and there is always a chance to see what is going on at the GMF. On the last day, a jury of experts will assess all projects. Prizes will be awarded to the team with the most interesting and creative idea in each category.
Places at the DW/BBC/GMF hackathon are strictly limited and going fast — but we are saving a couple of special tickets for last minute applications. They are free, and they come with access to all GMF events (including leisure activities). So if you are a journalist, developer, or designer (or simply a curious person with an interesting profile), please be in touch by May 28th, 23:59 CET — and tell us why you would like to join us.
We’re looking forward to seeing you at our hackathon in Bonn!
