Dreaming of a VR Christmas: Fader project and network of media enthusiasts launch immersive advent calendar
Update 13/12: To make sure #VRcalendar still runs on standard mobile devices and with slower internet connections, we decided to split it. There are now two parts (= two different links) with 12 windows each:
Part 1 covers December 1st – 12th (original link).
Part 2 covers December 13th – 24th (new link).
In the scope of the DNI project “Fader”, partners Vragments, DW Innovation, Euronews, and numerous members of the international VR community, most notably VR/AR expo organizers DIGILITY, launch their first VR/360 advent calendar today. The experimental Xmas experience will eventually feature 24 immersive stories/scenes and can be viewed on a wide range of devices.

No worries: The summer break is long over. It only took us a while to write a thorough Fader update post. Because everybody in the consortium (DW Innovation, Euronews, Vragments) has been really busy.
We – or more precisely: the alpha geeks among us — gave the editor/platform a couple of cool new features. We also attended and/or hosted several interesting VR/360 events in the last couple of months. And we made sure Fader won’t run out of fresh content anytime soon.
Here’s a quick overview of what we’ve achieved since the beginning of August.

Before we flip shut our laptops, pull off our slightly sweaty HMDs, and take a little summer break, it’s time for a quick recap of what team Fader* has accomplished in the last couple of months.

Beta testing digital tools is fun. Beta testing digital tools can also be strenuous, which is why most beta testers stick to a testing schedule and rarely add new work packages. However, much to our delight, our colleague Ole Krogsgaard at Euronews did exactly that: After significantly contributing to the scheduled Fader VR story on the French election launched by Euronews and Vragments last month, he decided that the VR/360 platform our consortium is trying to build should also play a part in his next project. So he took a collection of Euronews 360 footage on the effects of climate change in Europe — and turned it into a Fader story. Because “it just made sense.”

Fulfilling the DNI consortium’s mission to create a Fader story that uses special maps, templates, and new interactive features, our colleagues at Euronews and Vragments have just produced a VR reaction video recap of the French elections – and it’s quite exciting to watch.

As we enter the third month of the Fader 2.0 project, we’re happy to announce the development and marketing of our VR editor have been picking up steam. There have been discussions, meetings, workshops, and hacking sessions all over the place: Berlin, Bonn, Lyon, NYC, London, Munich – and picturesque Singen. Here’s a short summary of what the consortium has been up to.

When? September 11th – 15th (Pop-up Week), September 22nd (Conference)
What is it?
VR Pop-up Week = seven days full of virtual reality madness in the heart of Kreuzberg. There will be (spontaneous) workshops, showcases, beer, and nerd talk. VR Pop-up Week is very informal and free of charge. This is a VR playground.
VR Conference = a one day event that brings together all kinds of VR enthusiasts (journalists, storytellers, media innovators, techies) to share experiences and seek inspiration. This is much more structured and focused, and you will need to purchase a ticket.
