Baumhauer to highlight major changes at CANITEC

Guido Baumhauer, DW Director of Strategy, Marketing and Distribution

For the 12th year in a row, Deutsche Welle (DW) will be taking part in CANITEC in Acapulco, Mexico. DW’s Director of Strategy, Marketing and Distribution, Guido Baumhauer, will be attending the event and highlighting the major changes that DW has put in motion in 2012. DW has introduced a new channel featuring 20 hours of Spanish programming for Latin America and is continuing to focus on regional partnerships and coproductions to increase its presence in the region.

“We have also experienced a dramatic rise in our fan base in Latin America, where viewers are becoming more and more interested in our brand of pro-gramming – the European perspective of world issues and international trends,” says Baumhauer. “This all contributes to our recent success and increased viewership in Latin America.”

With Claves, DW is offering a new talk show that focuses on the special chal-lenges for Latin American countries in a globalized world. Hosted by Gonzalo Cáceres, this show is a collaboration with broadcasters throughout the region – like ARTV in Chile, SJRTV in Mexico and RTVC in Colombia. Baumhauer believes that this show in particular “really highlights DW’s successful partnerships and expansion in Latin America”.
DW has also created a good mix of experienced and young on-air personali-ties to bring life to the schedule – including Ana Plasencia, Carolina Chimoy and Paco Furio.

“We are especially looking forward to going to CANITEC to present our re-vamped new schedule and programming and our innovative new design,” says Baumhauer. “It has been very well received so far and we are sure that it will only add to our increased success in Latin America. We are excited about being able to receive direct feedback from viewers and partners alike.”
CANITEC is taking place in Acapulco, Mexico, from May 30 to June 1. Deutsche Welle will be participating as an exhibitor (Stand 102).

DW at the Convergence Summit in Amman

DW will be presenting its wide-reaching changes and programming highlights for the Arab world  at the 9th Convergence Summit in Amman, Jordan on May 22 and 23. DW’s Social Media Manager Julia Hildebrand will be taking part in the conference that is organized by the Arab Advisors Group.

DW has increased its focus on regional programming and intercultural dialogue in the Middle East with a schedule that offers 10 hours of Arabic programming and a six-hour block during primetime. This new programming line-up is tailored to meet the needs of the region’s broadcasters with a renewed focus on local partner-ships.

The success of “Shababtalk” can already speak for itself. More than 3.6 million viewers were tuning in to each episode in the show’s first three weeks. And the coproduction with Egypt’s market leader Al Hayah has been registering a market share of nearly 15 percent. The talk show brings together young representatives from the democratic movement in Egypt with their German counterparts from youth organizations, political parties and other associations.

DW focused on dialogue again with “On the Pulse”. It’s a talk show that brings Arab and German experts together to discuss issues related to democratization, politics, economics, the role of the government, justice and reli-gion.

New streaming partners in China

DW has secured distribution of several lifestyle and culture programs on four leading Chinese video portals – including  v.huanqiu.com, youku.com, tudou.com and ku6.com. These new partners place great importance on offering high quality, interesting, relevant, international programming to their audiences and reach approximately one million viewers throughout China.  “Networks in China are clearly gearing to meet their viewers’ demand for information, insights and true-life glimpses of how the other half lives,” says Petra Schneider, DW’s Director of Distribution.  “Their choice for DW’s specialized content – all things European – indicates their confidence that our content will satisfy this demand.”

Among the titles that have been chosen are the Chinese editions of Global Ideas and Future Now.  Global Ideas showcases people whose innovative ideas are helping combat global warming – from Thailand to Honduras, Jordan, India and Laos. A multinational team of authors, researchers, TV and online reporters works on a multimedia presentation of the projects. The result is www.ideasforacoolerworld.org, an online platform that offers video content as well as background information on the topics.  Future Now presents 20 visionary scientific projects on the key fields of communication, the environment, mobility and health.  Other titles in English include everything from science to travel. Discover Germany offers a comprehensive travel guide to destinations across Europe.
