Online

DW articles in English are being featured on the website of USA Today. Articles covering German politics, society and culture will be featured on the world section of the website, which brings in 115 million unique visitors every month. DW’s content will also be featured on USA Today’s social media channels. USA Today is the widest distributed newspaper in the US and content from DW will add to the international profile of their online news content.

Asia

Following up on the successful release of regionalized editions of DW’s hit lifestyle show Euromaxx in different Asian markets, an Indonesian version is being produced in cooperation with Metro TV. The Indonesian partner will take the original English version and re-edit the episode with voiceovers from an Indonesian narrator. Metro TV is one of Indonesia’s largest channels and reaches over 3.3 million people nationwide. It is also available on all of Indonesia’s major cable, IPTV and DTH providers.

Astro Awani, Malaysia’s largest news and current events channel is broadcasting five English-language programs from DW, including Global 3000 and Euromaxx. The channel is Malaysia’s only 24-7 news broadcaster and can be received by 80 percent of the population.

The Vietnamese OTT platform Vivas will now include DW. The partner reaches around 100,000 households in Vietnam.

In Pakistan, Lahore-based triple-play provider Nizara is offering DW in its basic package. Nizara packages TV broadcasts for use on mobile phones, tablets and PCs.

Latin America

Carnaval TV based in Coquimbo, Chile, is now broadcasting a selection of programs from DW (Español) This will include Al volante, Cuadriga, Cultura.21, Escápate, Hecho en Alemania and Patrimonio mundial. The terrestrial broadcaster has a technical reach of 100,000 households.

Europe

DW’s Focus on Europe is now being broadcast in Georgia in cooperation with local broadcasting partner Starvision. The European culture and political program will be broadcast weekly with a Georgian-language voiceover and the program design will be adapted for the Georgian market. Starvision reaches 700,000 viewers and is also available on a free app for iOS and Android. This partnership expands DW’s presence in Georgia, where DW’s Russian-language news program DW Nowosti is currently being broadcast by Georgia’s national public broadcaster.

Latin America

WIPR, Puerto Rico’s largest public broadcaster, has expanded cooperation with DW and will soon be broadcasting more DW programming. WIPR currently broadcasts Euromaxx and DW Noticias during prime time. The channel, which focuses on educational and cultural content, can be received by more than 1,6 million households in Puerto Rico and will significantly increase the reach of DW’s Spanish-language programming.

Brazilian partner Claro will be providing DW’s German-English language channel DW (Amerika) to all of the Olympic villages in Brazil during the 2016 summer games.

The Museum of Tomorrow in Rio de Janeiro will also be including reports from DW’s Futurando! and Camarote.21 in its “Anthropozän” exhibit, which is visited over 100,000 times each month.

Guatemalan news website Siglo 21 has embedded DW content boxes in Spanish with articles and videos from Enlaces, Cultura 21, Global 3000 and En forma.

North America

Three Spanish-language programs from DW are being carried on Telecentro, a Hispanic-American broadcaster in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. Telecentro reaches 30,000 households.

Africa

DW (Deutsch) will now be available in 10 countries in southern Africa via pay-TV partner Multichoice. Countries included are South Africa, Namibia, Angola, Botswana, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Zambia, Swaziland und Zimbabwe. The channel will also be available to Multichoice hotel subscribers.

Angola’s first private television broadcaster, TV Zimbo, is broadcasting Futurando!, Camarote.21 and Africa on the Move in Portuguese. TV Zimbo will also become a coproduction partner for Euromaxx. The partnership is a positive step into a broadcasting market that had previously been inaccessible due to political conditions.

North America

DW’s global English-language channel is now available in HD quality across North America. Partners in the USA and Canada can directly receive the channel on the SES-3 satellite. Numerous DW programs like Focus on Europe, Global 3000 and DW News will also soon be available in HD on the US public broadcasting network, PBS.

Africa

The Ghanaian broadcaster ABN TV is a new DW partner. Launching in 2013, the broadcaster reaches 10 million households in Africa and Europe via satellite. ABN TV is now broadcasting World Stories, Global 3000, Kick Off! Countdown, Kick Off! Bundesliga Highlights, Documentaries and Reports, In Good Shape and Conflict Zone.

Télé-Chad is now broadcasting a selection of programming from DW (Arabia). Kick Off!, Drive It and Tomorrow Today will now be broadcast both terrestrially and on NILESAT 201.

Asia

The Karachi-based broadband internet provider Connect Communications is a new DW partner in Pakistan. Offering a wide-range of broadband services, their television subsidiary dedear.com is broadcasting DW’s English-language channel to 70,000 households.

DW mobile content is now available to 5 million subscribers of Reliance JIO. Reliance is one of India’s fastest-growing providers of high-speed mobile connectivity.

Australia

DW’s Conflict Zone is now being broadcast on ABC News 24. The flagship news channel from the Australian Broadcasting Corporation reaches a potential 8.6 million households nationwide.

Online

DW’s online news content is now available in 20 languages on the news aggregator app Google Newsstand. Video content, where available, is also included as a YouTube channel along with the full-length news reports. Previously, DW had only been available in English on Google Newsstand.

The news app Bundle now includes content from DW Turkish. The app, which was developed in Turkey, provides users with news coming from 4,000 sources in 28 countries. Released in 2014, the app generates around 3.5 million visits every month.

Africa

DW has increased its reach in Kenya with a series of expanded partnerships. Hope Channel Kenya and Ebru Africa TV, both with nationwide broadcasting coverage, are now carrying a wide-selection of DW’s English television programming. Shine FM, a radio station based at Daystar University in Nairobi, is now broadcasting selected DW radio programming on VHF and livestream in English and Kiswahili. New Kenyan radio partners Wikwatyo FM in Kitui and Kisimaa FM in Kisii are broadcasting DW Kiswahili radio programs like Habari za Africa, Afya, Michezo and Vjana tugutuke.

In Tanzania, DW has also increased television and radio coverage with expanded partnerships. One of Tanzania’s largest media companies, AZAM media group, has increased its cooperation with DW and is now broadcasting one hour of DW Kiswahili radio programming every day on its new radio station U-FM. AZAM TV has been carrying a selection of  DW television programs since 2013. Also in Tanzania, Channel Ten from the Africa Media Group Ltd. is a new DW partner. The news and information channel now broadcasts the DW programs Conflict Zone, In Good Shape, Tomorrow Today, Made in Germany, Kick off! and Kino. Channel Ten is available via Intelsat 906 to audiences across Africa.

Asia

DW has a new cable TV partner in Vietnam. NetViet will be broadcasting the English-language programs In Good Shape, Drive it! and Discover Germany. The cable provider reaches 8 million people in Vietnam.

The national television network of Sri Lanka, Sri Lanka Rupavahini Corporation (SLRC), is now broadcasting the DW programs Global 3000, Shift and Treasures of the World. According to their own estimates, Rupavahini reaches more than 4 million households in Sri Lanka.

In Pakistan, DW’s English-language channel will be broadcast in its entirety on the basic package of the Karachi-based cable provider East&West Entertainment Cable Network.

Using synergies to create an impact

DW has been increasing its presence in Asia by adding more broadcasting and production partners while expanding into new regions. Since the launch of DW News, Asia has taken a larger focus due to its diverse and rapidly-growing media markets.

A big piece of DW’s strategy is collaborating with partners in target regions. By building strong partnerships from the ground up, DW can reach more people across Asia with programming that speaks to them.

Representatives from DW are currently in Singapore at the Asia TV & Forum Market (ATF) to explore the potential for growth in content markets across Asia. The event is one of the largest of its kind in Asia and presents a huge opportunity for DW to open new doors and become more visible.

To open doors with audiences, DW develops regionally-tailored co-productions with local partners. Two recent deals with partners in India and Vietnam are the latest advancements for DW in Asia.

The Indian public broadcaster Prasar Bharati and the Vietnamese state broadcaster VTV both signed memorandums of understanding (MOU) to work on co-productions in the near future.

Included in the MOU with Prasar Bharati are the co-production of DW’s award-winning lifestyle show Euromaxx in Hindi and dubbing the Hindi science program Manthan into other Indian languages.

“This opens a new chapter in the Indo-German relationship where public broadcasting is concerned,” said Prasar Bharati CEO Jawhar Sircar. “We have a special relationship with Deutsche Welle and we hope it will lead to more mutually beneficial broadcasting collaborations.”

The MOU with VTV will involve co-producing a new science magazine program. Since 2013, DW has been providing Vietnamese subtitled versions of nine shows including the popular Global 3000 and In Good Shape. Since March 2015, VTV has also packaged and broadcasted a Vietnamese version of Euromaxx. VTV has also broadcast DW’s English-language channel in its entirety since 2006.

Producing content that connects with audiences in diverse markets around the world requires more than a one-size-fits-all strategy. DW has always understood this and sets an example for international cooperation in broadcasting that diversifies programming and brings new ideas and perspectives to viewers.
