The modus operandi of diplomacy has been in the changing mode ever since ministries of foreign affairs were formed in the 17th century. The proliferation of scientific innovations clubbed with the daily strategic developments in global affairs have caused a caesura in the traditional system turning diplomats more compelled than ever to be interactive, responsive and transparent.

Exactly one month after suffering a lumbar disc herniation I seriously hesitated when receiving Deutsche Welle’s invitation to travel all the way to Germany for the Global Media Forum (GMF) 2015. Today, after surviving two 13 hour flights and back home in Mexico I certainly believe it was a great choice, the effort was definitely worth the experience.

In 2014, American photographer John Stanmeyer won the World Press Photo award in the contemporary issues category. His picture depicts a beach in Djibouti, at night, where a group of Somalian, Ethiopian and Eritrean immigrants raise their cell phones to the sky looking for a signal. They are on their way to Europe, and the shinny screen lights are the only things they have left connecting them to the world they are leaving behind. Today, development and technology go hand in hand. Stanmeyer’s snapshot is an example of how digitalisation has shaped not only our ways of communicating, but also our lives.
