Ellen Ueberschär’s Movie Pick

As a theologian, and a prominent member of Germany’s Lutheran Protestant Church, it’s interesting that Ellen Ueberschär’s favourite movie of all time should be the 1988 drama Einer trage des anderen Last – Bear Ye One Another’s Burden. It’s the story of the confrontation between a committed Marxist and a Protestant pastor. I remember seeing the movie in what was then still East Berlin and feeling very strongly that the Berlin Wall would soon fall.

Claus Hipp’s Movie Pick

Claus Hipp has been a keen equestrian all his life. Perhaps he has always dreamt of riding a chariot. Certainly, his favourite film of all time features the most famous chariot race in movie history. It is, of course, the 1959 epic Ben-Hur.

Rolf-Dieter Heuer’s Movie Pick

You might expect a man who’s at the head of one of the most-publicised scientific experiments of all time to choose a science-fiction movie. But after a hard day’s work trying to discover the origins of mass, what Rolf-Dieter Heuer most enjoys when he gets home is having a bit of a laugh. Which is why his FMOAT is a comedy: the wonderful What’s Up Doc? by the sometimes brilliant Peter Bogdanovich. A film that I, too, adore.
