Women Talk Online

A forum for women to talk to women

Women around the world: Thailand

In collaboration with EyeEm, DW invited photographers to share images that offer an insight into the lives of women around the world. This one was taken in Thailand by Chutima Treearayapong.

DW: Who is in the picture?

Chutima Treearayapong: I saw this hula girl in the music festival in Chiang Mai, Thailand.

What inspired you to take it?

The perfect position and the way she dressed and moved described the feeling and the whole vibe of the festival. Thanks to her for being kind enough to let me to so close.

What does your image say about the culture of women in your country?

All women should be proud of the way they are and be honest about what they want to do. I believe when one does what they think they can do best or what they love, it should show from the inside.

Everyone has their own unique beauty that should be expressed and not held in just because they are listening to what somebody else wants them to do.

How important are gender issues in your country?

As a daughter of an open-minded family, I am lucky enough to be allowed to choose what I want, express how I feel and voice my opinions and thoughts. But others are still overcome by older generations and by society which has expectations of what a ‘good daughter’ or a ‘good lady’ should do – such as marry certain men and be a good wife.

Do you think women are fairly treated in your county?

Of course not.

What needs to be changed?se

It will take a lot of time, but it should be possible if we, as the new generation, teach our kids to treat each other right. No stereotyping between genders. Also encourage people to come out and stand up their own rights. And also stop sex tourism.

Where do you think life as a woman would be easiest?

Not sure about it, but the fact that a lot of countries are run by female leaders and that there are more and more projects and movement on women’s rights, is a good sign. The world is moving faster than you ever noticed, so soon enough more places will become a better place for all genders.
