Devyani Khobragade, India’s deputy consul general in New York, was arrested recently outside of her daughter’s Manhattan school on charges that she lied on a visa application about how much she paid her housekeeper, an Indian national. Khobragade has claimed that she was treated like a common criminal and the news is creating waves in the Indian media, as are concerns about how the Indian government cares more about its more opulent citizens.

Akrami: ‘Women are afraid of what will happen in Afghanistan after 2014.’

Mary Akrami is the Executive Director of Afghan Women Skills Development Organization, which was founded in Kabul in 1999 for protecting women’s rights in Afghanistan. Women Talk Online blogger Beenish Javed met Akrami and asked her about the status of women in Afghanistan.

If the women of Pakistan do anything that has any semblance of normalcy, it is considered a miracle by feminists and a profanity by fundamentalists. Indians finally woke up to the fact that women were unsafe. Mass protests helped in changing the laws against rape, punishing the accused and ensuring justice for the victim, but for her father, Badri Singh Pandey, time seems to have come to a standstill.
