I read yesterday in a Romanian newspaper the testimony of a Romanian alpinist who is in the Everest area right now. He tells that Ueli Steck had also a summit permit for Nuptse (beside Everest and Lhotse) and that he might have tried to realize the “Triple Crown” (climb all the three before mentioned summits, but on new routes and without supplementary oxygen). On Sat. April 29th, Ueli has shared the cooking/lunch tent with Seven Summits people and talked to some of them in German. Here is the report that one alpinist gave after the accident: given that Ueli’s partner (Tenji Sherpa) suffered frostbites, Ueli was looking for another partner. He was not able to find one and therefore, he proceeded solo. He left on April 30th at 1:00 a.m. with the intention to climb Nuptse in alpine style. Around 10 a.m. Ueli was close to the summit, but something happened and he fell. I pasted below the link to the article – for more details about this testimony, you may use google to translate.

Could you please inquire about that hypothesis among the German speaking alpinists who are now on Everest (mainly those close to Seven Summits people) ? If this proves to be true, it explains why Ueli went alone on Nuptse: he did not intent just to acclimatize, but he meant to summit Nuptse as well before undertaking his main goal (the Everest-Lhotse traverse).
