It means “change in one’s way of life resulting from penitence or spiritual conversion. The biblical word for conversion, metanoia , means not just a shift in one’s views or opinions, but a fundamental change in direction.” (definition given by google)

It is the word used in the Gospel of John, chapter 3, when Jesus talks about being born again. Metanoia = total change of mind/way of thinking.
