<p>Working for an international broadcaster which has Africa as one of its key target groups, I often find it difficult to interest some of my colleagues in what is happening in the Arctic. So my attention was caught instantly when I came across an article by Chelsea Harvey in the Washington Post: <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/energy-environment/wp/2017/06/06/a-climate-chain-reaction-major-greenland-melting-could-devastate-crops-in-africa/?utm_term=.24d3af193b45" target="_blank">A climate chain reaction: Major Greenland melting could devastate crops in Africa</a>.<span id="more-17975"></span></p>
<p>It is often mentioned here on the Iceblog that <a href="http://blogs.dw.com/ice/?p=17617" target="_blank">what happens in the Arctic doesn’t stay in the Arctic</a>. Melting ice from Greenland’s giant ice sheet is of <a href="http://www.dw.com/en/sea-level-rising-at-triple-speed-since-1990/a-38966492" target="_blank">key importance to sea levels</a>, ocean currents and so our weather and climate, all over the globe.</p>
<p>But the study cited by Chelsea Harvey makes a direct connection between the icy north and a region certainly rarely brought into connection with icy weather: the Sahel zone of Africa.</p>
<p>The study was published on Monday in the journal <a href="http://www.pnas.org/content/early/2017/05/30/1619358114.abstract" target="_blank">Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.</a> I had to take a look.</p>
<p><strong>Icy Uncertainty</strong></p>
<p>The scientists write: “A major uncertainty concerning the 21st century climate is the ice sheet response to global warming. Paleodata indicate rapid ice sheet destabilizations during the last deglaciation, which could lead to an underestimation of sea level rise, as suggested in recent publications.”</p>
<p>I had that confirmed just last week by <a href="https://www.awi.de/en/about-us/service/press/archive/hans-otto-poertner-zum-ko-vorsitzenden-der-ipcc-arbeitsgruppe-ii-gewaehlt.html" target="_blank">Hans Pörtner, from Germany’s Alfred-Wegener-Institute, co-chair of the IPCC Working Group II,</a> which focuses on impacts, vulnerability and adaptation possibilities for humankind under climate change. I met him at a working meeting of the <a href="http://www.bioacid.de/" target="_blank">BIOACID</a> group in Kiel, as mentioned in the <a href="http://blogs.dw.com/ice/?p=17943" target="_blank">last blog post</a>.</p>

<p><strong>Worse than we thought</strong></p>
<p>“I think we have increased awareness that previous estimates of sea level rise have been too conservative”, he told me. Looking back at the earth’s history, he said, “we know that during the last interglacial, with 0.7 to two degrees global warming, above pre-industrial – these are the comparable numbers to where we are today – we had around 7 meters higher sea level. And if we compare and look back at the last period in earth’s history where we had 400 ppm CO2 &#8211; and that’s also where we are now &#8211; we had a similar degree of higher sea level.”</p>
<p>So far, countries have based their adaptation and coastal protection measures on earlier, conservative estimates. They urgently need more data to adapt and protect themselves against likely future climate change impacts.</p>
<p><strong>Disrupting the ocean conveyor belt</strong></p>
<p>Scientists are working on a special report for the IPCC on the ocean and the cryosphere, which Pörtner regards as one of the most challenging aspects of climate science. Ice sheet melt has accelerated over the last few decades. As well as raising sea level, the influx of fresh water could also upset our ocean current system, as the authors of this week’s PNAS study explain:</p>
<p>“The ensuing freshwater discharge coming from ice sheets could have significant impacts on global climate, and especially on the vulnerable tropical areas”, the researchers write. The lead author is Dimitri Defrance from the Institute Pierre Simon Laplace in France.</p>
<p>The scientists looked at the impact of “different scenarios of Greenland partial melting in the very sensitive Sahel region.”</p>

<p><strong>Drought, floods, migration</strong></p>
<p>Given that during the last glacial/deglacial period, “megadrought” episodes were observed in the Sahel region at times when there were massive iceberg surges and so large freshwater discharges, the researchers wanted to find out whether future melting of the Greenland ice sheet could destabilize agriculture in the Sahel zone, which stretches from Mauritania in western Africa to Sudan in the east.</p>
<p>They used models based on future climate scenarios (RCP8.5), which would increase sea level between 0.5 metres and three metres.</p>
<p>The results are alarming: “We first demonstrate that such a melting induces a drastic decrease of West African monsoon precipitation. Moreover, we quantify the agricultural area losses due to monsoon changes. Consequently, we pinpoint a large potential for migration of millions of people in the coming decades. Thus, the ice sheet destabilization provokes not only coastal damages but also large population migration in monsoon area.”</p>
<p>The scientists say the amount of land available for cultivation in the Sahel could shrink as sea level rises. At the same time, crops will need more water with temperatures rising, but rainfall would be decreasing.</p>
<p>So, the study concludes, “without any adaptation measures, tens to hundreds million people could be forced to leave the Sahel by the end of this century. On top of this quantification, the sea level rise impact over coastal areas has to be superimposed, implying that the Sahel population could be strongly at threat in case of rapid Greenland melting.”</p>
<p>Of course, what actually happens will depend on the extent to which we reduce our greenhouse gases. The study works out what could happen if we keep more or less to “business as usual”.</p>

<p><strong>Oceans and climate on the UN agenda</strong></p>
<p>This week, the <a href="http://p.dw.com/p/2eJJS" target="_blank">first ever UN Ocean Conference</a> has been taking place in New York. Frank Bainimarama, the Prime Minister of Fiji, co-host and also incoming President of this year’s UN climate conference to be held in Bonn, Germany in November, told the influential participants: “climate change poses the biggest threat the world has ever known. And the quality of our oceans and seas is also deteriorating at an alarming rate. They are interlinked, because rising sea levels, as well as ocean acidity and warmer waters have a direct effect on our reefs and fish stocks and the prosperity of our coastal communities.”</p>
<p>Add to that the potentially massively disrupting effect of the influx of freshwater from melting ice sheets on our global weather and climate patterns, and there can be no doubt that what happens in Greenland and the rest of the Arctic is relevant to us all.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.dw.com/en/un-says-2016-earths-warmest-year-so-far/a-37183352" target="_blank">2016 was not only the warmest year as far as our planet’s atmospheric temperature was concerned</a>. In its “Statement on the State of the Global Climate 2016”, published earlier this year, the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO)confirmed globally averaged sea-surface temperatures were the warmest on record.</p>
<p>Scientists were surprised at the speed at which sea temperatures have risen. In the last century, the 15 years with the highest ocean heat anomalies have all been within the last two decades, according to data from the United States&#8217; National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI). And the trend seems set to continue.</p>

<p><strong>No alternative to climate action</strong></p>
<p>IPCC expert Pörtner says the writing is on the wall. “We really have to go into ambitious mitigation, if we want to have a chance to keep this under control”.</p>
<p>At the same time, US President Trump is planning to <a href="http://www.dw.com/en/donald-trump-withdraws-us-from-paris-climate-deal/a-39085040" target="_blank">take the USA out of the Paris Agreement</a>. This was the reaction to that from IPCC expert Pörtner:</p>
<p>“Climate change is clearly human made, responsible leadership means that this cannot simply be denied or ignored. I think this is a call for better education and information of the public so that it cannot be misled by bending the truth &#8211; and this is what it comes down to.”</p>
<p>He quotes the last report from the IPCC: &#8220;Without additional mitigation efforts beyond those in place today, and even with adaptation, warming by the end of the 21st century will lead to very high risk of severe, widespread and irreversible impacts&#8221;.</p>
<p>He also mentions another key insight from that body: “climate change is a problem of the commons, requiring collective action at the global scale. Effective mitigation will not be achieved if individual agents advance their own interests independently.”</p>
<p>Carol Turley, Senior Scientist at the <a href="http://www.pml.ac.uk/" target="_blank">Plymouth Marine Laboratory </a>in the UK, has been in New York at the UN conference this week, highlighting the issue of ocean acidification.  She told me she was inspired to see that policy makers at the highest level, including the Secretary General of the United Nations , were starting to act on the advice of scientists.</p>
<p>Young German scientist Martina Stiasny from Germany’s <a href="http://www.geomar.de/en/" target="_blank">GEOMAR</a> institute in Kiel, was in New York to present her research findings on how climate change is affecting fisheries.</p>

<p>Addressing a major conference in the USA, at a time when the country’s President appears to be refusing to listen to science? Martina Stiasny describes Trump’s decision to leave the Paris Agreement as a “major disappointment”. But she takes heart from the widespread movement to press ahead with emissions reductions and a transition to renewable energy:</p>
<p>“The statement that America made by pulling out is of course the wrong message to send to the world”, she told me.</p>
<p>An apt insight, in the light of that study on how melting Arctic ice could well cause drought and famine in Africa in years to come.</p>
<p>But the “next generation” scientist is not giving up:</p>
<p>“Fighting climate change is done every day by everyone on this planet and I believe we have no choice but to stay optimistic,” she says.</p>
<p>We need more people like that.</p>

<p>“Irene, have you heard the news? Looks like Trump has pulled out of the Paris Agreement.” While the US President kept the suspense up until Thursday night &#8211; has he, hasn’t he, will he, won’t he -I struggled to reconcile his action with what I was hearing from a wide spectrum of highly intelligent people with decades of research and experience to their credit.</p>
<p>I was in Kiel this week, on Germany’s Baltic coast, attending a working meeting of the scientists involved in <a href="http://www.bioacid.de/" target="_blank">BIOACID</a>, a national German programme (supported by the BMBF, <a href="https://www.bmbf.de/en/index.html" target="_blank">Federal Ministry of Education and Research</a>) to investigate the “Biological Impacts of Ocean Acidification”.  It has almost run its course, eight years of research in the bag.</p>
<p>And what I was hearing did nothing to allay my concern about the impacts of  our greenhouse gas emissions.  We are rapidly and undeniably changing the planet we live on – land and sea. And that applies particularly to the Arctic.</p>

<p><strong>The scientific evidence</strong></p>
<p>Can President Trump really fail to see the dangers of our human interference?  Is he really oblivious to what climate change is doing to the ocean that covers 70 percent of the surface of our planet?</p>
<p>Maybe he lives in a parallel universe, where alternative facts prevail.</p>
<p>Back in 2010, I was able to <a href="http://p.dw.com/p/O05e" target="_blank">witness the work of some of the scientists</a> assembled in Kiel this week at first hand, as they lowered mesocosms, a kind of giant test tubes, into the Arctic Ocean off the coast of Svalbard. The aim was to find out how the life forms in the water would react to increasing acidification of their environment, as our greenhouse gas emissions result in more and more CO2 being absorbed into the ocean.</p>
<p><strong>Drawing the threads together</strong></p>

<p>Ulf  Riebesell is Professor of Professor of Biological Oceanography at, <a href="http://www.geomar.de/en/" target="_blank">GEOMAR, the Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research </a>in Kiel, and the coordinator of BIOACID.</p>
<p>When I first met him, he was kitted out in survival gear, supervising the transport and deployment of the mesocosms from Germany up to the Svalbard archipelago. He doesn’t need the cold-weather gear this week, in a summery Kiel, where he gathered representatives of the different working groups involved in the German project to draw some threads together as the project approaches its conclusion in November.</p>
<p>Good timing. The results will be ready to hand to the delegates attending this year’s UN climate extravaganza, COP23, in Bonn. Another key piece in the jigsaw puzzle of how climate change is affecting the world we live in and will determine the future of coming generations.</p>
<p><strong>All creatures great and small</strong></p>
<p>The scientists assembled represent a wide range of expertise.  From the tiniest of microbes through algae, corals, fish and the myriad organisms that live in our seas- they have been trying to find out what happens when living conditions change for our fellow planetary residents &#8211; and  how all this affects  an ever-increasing population of  humans and the complex societies we live in.</p>
<p>The ocean is changing at an unprecedented rate.  It is becoming warmer, even in the depths, and it is becoming more acidic.</p>
<p>The work of Riebesell and his colleagues has shown that in our rapidly warming world, the CO2 that goes into the ocean is reducing the amount of calcium carbonate in the sea water, making life very difficult for sea creatures that use it to form their skeletons or shells. This will affect coral, mussels, snails, sea urchins, starfish as well as fish and other organisms. Some of these species will simply not be able to compete with others in the ocean of the future.</p>

<p><strong>The Arctic predicament</strong></p>
<p>Acidification is not something that affects all regions and species equally. Once again, the Arctic is getting the worst of it. Cold water absorbs CO2 faster. Experiments in the Arctic indicate that the sea water there could become corrosive within a few decades, as <a href="http://blogs.dw.com/ice/?p=17881" target="_blank">Ulf Riebesell has told me on several occasions </a>since I first met him on Svalbard in 2010. &#8220;That means the shells and skeletons of some sea creatures would simply dissolve.&#8221;</p>
<p>Scientists warn that a combination of acidification, warming and stressors like pollution of all sorts will ultimately affect the food chain. (Indeed that is already happening).</p>
<p><strong>Warming as usual?</strong></p>
<p>While the BIOACID project comes to an end and the scientists fight for new funding to carry on research into ocean acidification, which requires a combination of field-work and modelling, the world continues on course for far more than the two degrees – or 1,5 set out in the Paris Agreement.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.economist.com/" target="_blank">“Ocean Warning” was the cover title on the Economist magazine this week</a>, ahead of next week’s  <a href="https://oceanconference.un.org/" target="_blank">UN Oceans Conference in New York.</a></p>
<p>“The Paris Agreement is the single best hope for protecting the ocean and its resources”, the magazine reads. But it stresses: “the limits agreed on in Paris will not prevent sea levels from rising and corals from bleaching. Indeed, unless they are drastically strengthened, both problems risk getting much worse. Mankind is increasingly able to see the damage it is doing to the ocean. Whether it can stop it is another question”.</p>

<p><strong>Bending the truth?</strong></p>
<p>At the meeting in Kiel, I asked <a href="https://www.awi.de/en/about-us/organisation/staff/hans-otto-poertner.html" target="_blank">Professor Hans-Otto Pörtner</a>, the other coordinator of BIOACID, senior scientist at the Alfred Wegener Institute and co-chair of the <a href="http://www.ipcc-wg2.awi.de/" target="_blank">IPCC Working Group 2</a> for his view of the current situation,  with <a href="http://www.dw.com/en/trump-effect-is-not-terminal-for-climate-talks/a-38755294" target="_blank">US President Trump getting set to leave the Paris Agreement:</a></p>
<p>“Climate change is clearly human made, responsible leadership means that this cannot simply be denied or ignored. I think this is a call for better education and information of the public so that it cannot be misled by bending the truth &#8211; and this is what it comes down to. As the last report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) put it: &#8220;Without additional mitigation efforts beyond those in place today, and even with adaptation, warming by the end of the 21st century will lead to very high risk of severe, widespread and irreversible impacts&#8221;. In its previous analysis of decision-making to limit climate change and its effects, the IPCC also noted that climate change is a problem of the commons, requiring collective action at the global scale. Effective mitigation will not be achieved if individual agents advance their own interests independently.”</p>
<p><strong>Call to action</strong></p>
<p>Indeed. We are all in this together.</p>
<p>But there is not only bad news:</p>
<p>“It remains to be seen to what extent U.S. emissions will be driven by federal policy, or actions at the State and city level, or by market and technological changes”, Professor Pörtner told me.</p>
<p>There is, it seems to me, an upside to President Trump’s decision to live in his own alternative reality. It galvanizes those of us who live in the real world to make sure climate action goes ahead. China and the EU closed ranks this week. States, companies, civil societies and committed individuals across the USA are stressing they will press on with the green energy revolution regardless.</p>
<p>In the interests of the icy north – and the rest of the planet it influences so considerably – we really have no choice.</p>

<p>A <a href="http://www.nature.com/nclimate/journal/vaop/ncurrent/full/nclimate3228.html">new study reported in Nature Climate Change this week </a>says ocean acidification is spreading rapidly in the western Arctic Ocean in both area and depth. That means a much wider, deeper area than before is becoming so acidic that many marine organisms of key importance to the food chain will no longer be able to survive there.</p>
<p>The study by an international team including scientists from the USA, China and Sweden, is based on data collected between the 1990s and 2010. Presumably, things have got worse rather than better since then. Unfortunately, it takes a long time for scientific research to be evaluated, reviewed and published, so current developments can easily overtake assessments which are already alarming enough in themselves. So yes, I would say this should make us sit up and listen, and lend even more urgency to the need for reducing emissions and combating climate change.</p>
<p><strong>Acid bath for shellfish</strong></p>
<p><a href="http://www.dw.com/en/info-film-why-are-oceans-becoming-more-acidic/a-19491824">Ocean acidification is a process that happens when carbon dioxide out of the air dissolves in the sea</a>, lowering the pH of the water. This reduces the concentration of aragonite in the water, a form of calcium carbonate which shellfish and other marine organisms use to build their shells or skeletons. If the water becomes too acidic, this cannot be formed to the same extent, leaving the animals without their protective shells.</p>
<p>The latest published research shows that acidification is not only affecting much wider areas of the Arctic Ocean, but also that it is happening down to a much greater depth than before.</p>

<p>Between the 1990s and 2010, acidified waters expanded northward around 300 nautical miles from the Chukchi slope off the coast of northwestern Alaska, to just below the North Pole, the scientists write. At the same time the depth of acidified waters has increased from approximately 325 feet to over 800 feet, or from 100 to 250  metres.</p>
<p>“The Arctic Ocean is the first ocean where we see such a rapid and large-scale increase in acidification, at least twice as fast as that observed in the Pacific or Atlantic oceans”, said Professor Wei-Jun Cai from the University of Delaware and Mary A.S. Lighthipe, Professor of Earth, Ocean and Environment at the same University. Cai is the US lead principal investigator on the project.</p>
<p>“The rapid spread of ocean acidification in the western Arctic has implications for marine life, particularly clams, mussels and tiny sea snails that may have difficulty building or maintaining their shells in increasingly acidified waters”, said Richard Feely, senior scientist with NOAA and a co-author.</p>
<p>Tiny sea snails called pteropods are part of the Arctic food web and important to the diet of salmon and herring. Their decline could affect the larger marine ecosystem.</p>
<p>Among the Arctic species potentially at risk from ocean acidification are subsistence fisheries of shrimp and varieties of salmon and crab.</p>
<p>The polar regions are suffering more than others, because cold water absorbs CO2 faster.</p>

<p><strong>Less ice to hold back warm water </strong></p>
<p>The acidification study published this week used water samples taken during cruises by the Chinese ice breaker XueLong (snow dragon) in the summer 2008 and 2010 from the upper ocean of the Arctic’s marginal seas, right up to the North Pole, as well as data from three other cruises going back to 1994. The data, along with model simulations, suggest that increased Pacific Winter Water, driven by circulation patterns and retreating sea ice in the summer season, is primarily responsible for the expansion of ocean acidification, according to Di Qi, the lead author of the paper.</p>
<p>This water from the Pacific comes through the Bering Strait and shelf of the Chukchi Sea into the Arctic basin. Melting sea ice is one factor which allows more of the Pacific water to flow into the Arctic Ocean. The Pacific Ocean water is already high in carbon dioxide and has higher acidity. As it moves north, its acidity increases further for various reasons.</p>
<p>The melting and retreating of Arctic sea ice in the summer months also lets Pacific water move further north than in the past.</p>
<p>The scientists have observed that Arctic ocean ice melt in summer used to occur only in shallow waters with depths of less than 650 feet or 200 meters. But now, it spreads further into the Arctic Ocean.</p>
<p>“It’s like a melting pond floating on the Arctic Ocean. It’s a thin water mass that exchanges carbon dioxide rapidly with the atmosphere above, causing carbon dioxide and acidity to increase in the meltwater on top of the seawater”, said Cai. “When the ice forms in winter, acidified waters below the ice become dense and sink down into the water column, spreading into deeper waters.”</p>

<p><strong>Climate chaos &#8211; not just for polar bears </strong></p>
<p>In 2010, I spent some time with scientists conducting the world’s first experiments in nature, off the coast of Svalbard, to establish exactly how increasing acidification affects the flora and fauna in the Arctic Ocean.</p>
<p>Mesocosms, or giant test-tubes, were lowered into the sea to capture a water column with living organisms inside it. Different amounts of CO2 were added to simulate the effects of different emissions scenarios in the coming decades.</p>
<p>Similar experiments are still being conducted in different ocean areas. Results so far have been scary to say the least.</p>
<p>Mussels, snails, sea urchins, starfish, coral, fish, “some of these species will simply not be able to compete with others in the ocean of the future”, <a href="http://www.geomar.de/index.php?id=uriebesell">Ulf Riebesell from the Helmholtz Institute for Ocean Research in Kiel, GEOMAR,</a> told me in an interview back in 2013, when he was a <a href="http://www.dw.com/en/the-other-climate-problem-co2-threatens-marine-life/a-17268533">lead author of a report by the International Programme on the State of the Oceans (IPSO)</a>. He was also one of the scientists in charge of that <a href="http://www.dw.com/en/scientists-enter-unusual-alliance-to-study-arctic-ocean/a-5720222">first Arctic acidification in situ experiment I witnessed back in 2010</a>. He is currently coordinator of the German national project <a href="http://www.bioacid.de/front_content.php?idcat=569&amp;idlang=22">Biological Impacts of Ocean ACIDification</a> (BIOACID).</p>
<p>Riebesell says the sea water in the Arctic could become corrosive within a few decades. “The shells and skeletons of some sea creatures would simply dissolve”, he told me.</p>

<p><strong>Those feedback loops</strong></p>
<p>February 27<sup>th</sup> was <a href="http://polarbearsinternational.org/get-involved/international-polar-bear-day">Polar Bear Day.</a> Attention focused on how the decline of sea ice is having devastating impacts on those iconic creatures, who have become a key symbol of the effect of our human-induced climate change on the Arctic. Sea snails may not be quite as charismatic, but the related threat to all these tiny organisms in the water is no less worthy of our attention.  <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/energy-environment/wp/2017/02/27/scientists-just-measured-a-rapid-growth-in-acidity-in-the-arctic-ocean-linked-to-climate-change/?utm_term=.89aed7b1dfaf">Journalist Chelsea Harvey of The Washington Post writes</a>:</p>
<p>“The Arctic is suffering so many consequences related to climate change, it’s hard to know where to begin anymore (…)  The study highlights the interconnected nature of climate consequences in the Arctic – the way that greenhouse gas emissions, rising temperatures, ice melt and ocean acidification are all linked and help to reinforce one another. And it points to yet another example of a climate effect that’s not just a concern for the future, but is already an issue – and a growing one – today.”</p>
<p>Indeed, Chelsea. Climate change is already changing our lives and our planet. And, of course, what happens in the Arctic doesn’t stay in the Arctic. The scientists studying ocean acidification and its impacts are also concerned about a feedback effect that will further exacerbate global warming.</p>
<p>When the <a href="http://www.stateoftheocean.org/science/state-of-the-ocean-report/">IPSO report on the state of the oceans</a> was published, I interviewed the <a href="http://www.zoo.ox.ac.uk/people/view/rogers_ad.htm">organisation’s scientific director Alex Rogers,</a> a professor of conservation biology at the University of Oxford. He told me the oceans were already taking up about a third of the carbon dioxide we are producing. The report said sea water was already 26 percent more acidic than it was before the onset of the Industrial Revolution – and it could be 170 percent more acidic by 2100. In the long run, the ocean will become the biggest sink for human-produced CO2, but it will absorb it at a slower rate.</p>
<p>“Its buffer capacity will decrease, the more acidic the ocean becomes”, Kiel-based scientist Ulf Riebesell told me.</p>
<p>The IPSO report also drew a very unsettling comparison between conditions today and climate change events in the past that have resulted in mass extinctions:</p>
<p>“On a lot of these major extinction events we see the fingerprints of high temperatures and acidification, similar effects to the ones that we are experiencing today”.</p>
<p>Now there is a frightening possibility.</p>
<p>It is not too late to do something about this, although the experts stress the CO2 will remain in the oceans for thousands of years. The scientists tell us the key step would be to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, but also to reduce pollution and other pressures on the ocean ecosystem, which reduce its resilience. High time for the  <a href="https://sustainabledevelopment.un.org/partnership/?p=13900">Clean Seas initiative</a>, to reduce ocean pollution from marine litter, especially from plastic, launched this week by the United Nations Environment Programme.</p>

<p>Last year I had an interesting guest in the studio here at Deutsche Welle. We talked for a good half hour about climate change and the ocean and the need for the Paris Agreement to be put into action, and whether we can still save the Arctic ice as we have known it in our lifetimes.<br />

She was President and Director of the renowned Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute from 2008 to 2015, and became a member of the scientific advisory board to UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon in 2013. She was in Bonn for a lecture organized by Björn Müller-Bohlen from the department of strategic partnerships at the <a href="https://www.fiw.uni-bonn.de/welcome?set_language=en" target="_blank">Forum of International Academic Sciences in Bonn</a>, to explain to people here how climate change is affecting the ocean.</p>

<p>I was surprised to say the least when I saw that from the beginning of February Dr. Susan K. Avery had been elected to the board of directors of ExxonMobil.</p>
<p><strong>Topsy-turvy world?</strong></p>
<p>So the former Exxon chief Rex Tillerson has taken the key post of Secretary of State in the <a href="http://www.dw.com/en/living-planet-no-trump-card-for-the-climate/av-37192442" target="_blank">Trump administration, </a> climate skeptic Scott Pruitt takes over the EPA, the <a href="http://www.dw.com/en/trump-threatens-environmental-democracy/a-37371097" target="_blank">world worries about the future of the climate and the environment</a> &#8211;  and a leading climate scientist has joined the “largest publicly traded international oil and gas company and one of the largest refiners and marketers of petroleum products”, as <a href="http://corporate.exxonmobil.com/" target="_blank">ExxonMobil describes itself</a>. It is also at the centre of a huge controversy over claims that it denied climate change, covering up facts and funding climate skeptic bodies. Interesting times indeed. <a href="http://www.dw.com/en/living-planet-dawn-of-the-trumpocene/av-37192480" target="_blank">(The Dawn of the Trumpocene?) </a>What are we to make of it all?</p>
<p>I emailed Dr. Avery to try to arrange another interview to discuss her motivation and expectations. She did respond swiftly, telling me she was “honored to be elected to the Board and look forward to serving in that capacity.” But interview requests are being handled by Exxon.</p>
<p>Reactions to her appointment have been mixed, ranging from those who see this as a mere greenwashing type of move by Exxon, and those who think this represents a gradual shift in thinking in the corporation (pragmatic shift to renewable energies given the problems ahead for fossil fuel companies?)  and the optimists who think this could possibly even be a chance for a climate expert to influence the policies of the fossil fuel giant and a sign that the times are ‘a changin’.</p>

<p>I decided to have another look and listen to the <a href="http://www.dw.com/en/living-planet-climate-change-and-ocean-ecosystems/av-19400059" target="_blank">interview I recorded with Dr. Avery last year</a>, to remind myself and those who will be watching her actions with interest, of what she stands for when it comes to protecting the climate, the ocean and the Arctic.</p>
<p>She is certainly in no doubt about the human factor in climate change. When I mentioned that we humans had been “interfering” with the climate, she laughed good-naturedly at my under-statement, and went on to elaborate on how we are increasing the temperature of the atmosphere by infusing carbon into it. She clearly named fossil fuels as a cause. So what, I wonder, will she be telling the board of ExxonMobil?</p>
<p>Our subject was the effect of greenhouse gas emissions on the oceans in particular. She stressed that while 25 percent of the carbon dioxide we release goes into the atmosphere, a stunning 93 percent of the extra warming created is in the ocean. I went on to ask her about the impacts:</p>
<p>“The carbon dioxide we’ve put into the atmosphere already and the heating associated with that means that we’re already pre-destined for a certain amount of global temperature increase. Many people say we have already pre-destined at least one and a half degrees, some will say almost two degrees. That’s why it’s really important to address the warming questions. And I was really pleased to see the Paris Agreement finally signed off on.”</p>

<p><strong>Fossil fuel threat to the ocean</strong></p>
<p>With the<a href="http://www.dw.com/en/climate-skeptic-advisor-says-trump-could-pull-out-of-paris-climate-agreement-in-days/a-37351108" target="_blank"> future of US participation in implementing the Paris Agreement very much up in the air under the Trump administration</a>, one wonders how Avery is going to push the decarbonisation of the economy necessary to keep anywhere near the two degree limit, on the board of one of the world’s biggest oil and petroleum concerns.</p>
<p>She also stressed in her talk with me the huge threat to the food chain posed by <a href="http://www.dw.com/en/info-film-why-are-oceans-becoming-more-acidic/a-19491824" target="_blank">ocean acidification,</a> as carbon dioxide emissions change the PH of the ocean.</p>
<p>“Our coral reef systems and a lot of our ecosystems in the ocean are having a battle with warming, and those ecosystems that involve shell production and reproduction, as in our reef systems, are also battling acidification issues. This is really critical, because it attacks a lot of the base of the food chain for a lot of these eco-systems. “</p>
<p>Another of the threats to the ocean and the creatures in it is pollution, and Avery told me her time as head of Woodshole was a time of “many crises  in the ocean”  &#8211; including the  <a href="http://www.dw.com/en/deepwater-horizon-where-has-the-oil-gone/a-16622303" target="_blank">Deep Water Horizon oil spill</a>:</p>
<p>“That was a real challenge for us in terms of looking at the technologies we have in a different way, solving a different type of problem, and from these crisis moments we learned a lot about our science and our technology, and how to improve it and go forward.”</p>
<p>Well, here’s hoping that knowledge and Dr. Avery’s expertise here will help the company where she is now on the board.</p>

<p><strong>Kudos for the journos</strong></p>
<p>Another point that came out of our interview was Avery’s firm belief in the key role the media have to play in explaining what is happening to our climate and environment to “ordinary people”.</p>
<p>“It is things like <a href="http://www.dw.com/en/living-planet-environment-stories-from-around-the-world/a-19385797" target="_blank"><strong><em>Living Planet</em></strong></a> and others that really begin to educate people and involve people in understanding their environment and their planet,” she said in the DW studio.</p>
<p>As <a href="http://www.dw.com/en/irene-quaile/a-19561407" target="_blank">host and producer </a>of <strong><em>Living Planet</em></strong> together with my colleague <a href="http://www.dw.com/en/charlotta-lomas/a-19561421" target="_blank">Charlotta Lomas</a>, it was good to have that acknowledgement from a leading scientist and adviser to the UN. Avery also mentioned progress in recent decades in raising public awareness of environmental issues, such as pollution or acid rain, thanks not least to media coverage.</p>
<p>Unfortunately that job is not made any easier – especially in the United States – with an administration that tries to gag journalists and, it seems, any organization that does not spread the information the government think should be spread.</p>
<p><strong>Motives and methods</strong></p>
<p>So what motivates someone like Susan Avery to take on a controversial position like board membership on a company whose main business results in harmful changes to the planet which she has been working for years to publicise? Perhaps another snippet from the interview can shed some light, when I asked my guest Avery how she had come to be a member of the board of advisors to Ban Ki Moon (not that I would compare that to joining ExxonMobil).</p>
<p>“I was intrigued by the opportunity to play on a stage level that was very high politically, and making sure that science was interfaced in a number of dimensions, into the policy and decision-making process at that level. The committee itself is a wonderful board in terms of the different disciplines represented, different countries represented, different perspectives we all have on the science and the environment, and on human health issues, that the UN needs to be cognizant of.”</p>
<p>Clearly, this is a woman who likes to be in influential positions – and to bring different camps and expertise together:</p>
<p>“We talked a lot about science, the policy-society interface, the role and engagement of stakeholders, those are governments at all levels, the business community, and conservation.</p>

<p><strong>What about the Arctic?</strong></p>
<p>Of course one of the Iceblogger’s  most urgent concerns is <a href="http://www.dw.com/en/scientists-call-on-leaders-in-paris-to-avert-climate-threat-to-icy-regions/a-18884897" target="_blank">what climate change is doing to the polar regions.</a>  With record temperatures in the Arctic and record low sea ice cover, I asked Avery to sum up the impacts for our <strong><em>Living Planet</em></strong> listeners. She expressed her concern that “we are beginning to see a very rapid increase in ice loss in the Arctic”. She cited the melting of the big land ice glaciers as a major contributor to sea level rise. She talked of how not only atmospheric temperature but warming ocean waters are degrounding glaciers and melting ice from below:</p>
<p>“That is a <a href="http://www.dw.com/en/living-planet-ocean-warming-increases-threat-from-rising-seas/av-19055769" target="_blank">major concern for sea level rise</a>, but also because when the land-based ice comes into the ocean, you get a freshening of certain parts of the ocean, so particularly the sub-polar north Atlantic, so you have a <a href="http://www.dw.com/en/collapse-of-gulf-stream-poses-threat-to-life-as-we-know-it/a-37092246" target="_blank">potential for interfacing with our normal thermohaline circulation systems and (this) could dramatically change that</a>. Changes in salinity are beginning to be noticed. And changes in salinity are a signal that the water cycle is becoming more vigorous. So all of this is coupled together. What’s in the Arctic is not staying in the Arctic. What’s in the Antarctic is not staying in the Antarctic. I would say the polar regions are regions where we don’t have a lot of time before we see major, massive changes”.</p>
<p>So let us hope Dr. Avery will be able to convince her fellow board-members and the decision makers at ExxonMobil about that – and about what has to happen. Fossil fuel emissions in general have got to go down. And the fragile Arctic in particular is in need of protection. Clearly, she has her work cut out for her.</p>

<p><strong>Is there still time?</strong></p>
<p>Reporting Avery’s appointment to the ExxonMobil board, the news agency AFP quotes her as saying:</p>
<p>&#8220;Clearly climate science is telling us (to) get off fossil fuels as much as possible.&#8221;</p>
<p>I asked her whether she believed, given that we have already put so much extra CO2 into the atmosphere and the ocean, that there was any way we would be able to reverse what is happening in the Arctic. Her reply – unsurprisingly – was not too reassuring:</p>
<p>“I don’t have an answer, to be honest. I think we’re still learning a lot about the Arctic and its interface with lower latitudes, how that water basically changes circulation systems, and on what scale. (…)We know so little, about the Arctic, the life forms underneath the ice (…) And I think it’s really important, because the Arctic will be a major economic zone. We’ve already seen the North-West Passage through the Arctic waters, we’re going to see migration of certain fisheries around the world, and we don’t even know completely what kind of biological life we have below that ice. We have the ability to get underneath the ice now. I call these the frontiers, of the ocean, and that includes looking under ice. It’s a really exciting time.”</p>
<p class="size-full wp-image-15907">If that excitement can be put into protecting the fragile polar ecosystems rather than taking advantage of our emissions misdeeds to date to use easier access for commercial exploitation, I am all for it.</p>
<p class="size-full wp-image-15907">ExxonMobil remains a primary target of environmentalists. It has been the subject of investigative reports by environmental news nonprofit <a href="https://insideclimatenews.org/" target="_blank">Inside Climate News</a> and others, saying it &#8220;manufactured doubt&#8221; about climate science even while contradicted by research by its own climate scientists. The company says the reports are biased, but faces government investigations over the controversy. In January, a Massachusetts court ruled the oil giant must turn over 40 years of documents on climate change, in a win for Massachusetts Attorney General Maura Healey, who has described the probe as a fraud investigation.   ExxonMobil has countersued against Healey, arguing she lacks jurisdiction in the matter.</p>
<p>As I indicated above, there are environmentalists who were not impressed by the appointment of a climate scientist to the fossil fuel giant’s board. AFP quotes Shanna Cleveland of Ceres, a nonprofit group that works on shareholder actions to pressure companies to address climate change. She called the move a &#8220;really good first step, but not much more than that&#8221;, and fears Susan Avery could be  a &#8220;lone vote in the wilderness&#8221; on climate change given ExxonMobil&#8217;s record on the issue.</p>
<p>The climate advocacy group <a href="http://350action.org/" target="_blank">350.org</a> dismissed the appointment as &#8220;little more than a PR stunt.&#8221;</p>
<p><strong>Scientists to the fore</strong></p>
<p>But at a time when some critics say the <a href="http://www.dw.com/en/trump-threatens-environmental-democracy/a-37371097" target="_blank">Trump administration is threatening environmental democracy in the USA</a>, I would prefer to see Dr. Avery’s new position as a move in the right direction, if a tiny one.</p>
<p>With<a href="http://time.com/4656630/scientists-march-on-washington-date/" target="_blank"> scientists gearing up to march on Washington </a>in the not-too-distant future, we can do with experts who acknowledge, understand and call for action on climate change on every level, in every corner.</p>
<p>Susan Avery described her time on the UN scientific advisory board in her interview with me here in Bonn as as “a fun exercise.” In the current climate, I cannot imagine the same will apply to being the climate advocate on the board of a controversial fossil fuels giant like ExxonMobil.</p>

<p>As 2016 draws to an end, the shortest day has passed in the northern hemisphere, and it should normally be a “cool” time of the year, in more ways than one, especially in the Arctic. But with temperatures at a record high, sea ice at a record low and feedback loops springing into action, the Arctic is hotting up – and I wish I could say the same for efforts to halt climate change.</p>

<p><em>Meteorologist Scott Sutherland <a href="https://www.theweathernetwork.com/news/articles/north-pole-reaches-30-celsius-hotter-than-normal-thursday/77265/" target="_blank">writes on Dec. 22<sup>nd</sup>:</a></em></p>
<p>“(…) North Pole temperatures have climbed to 30<sup>o</sup>C hotter than normal for this time of year.</p>
<p>(…) Now, in late December, in the darkness of the Arctic winter, air temperatures at the North Pole have actually reached the freezing point, as recorded by weather buoys floating within a few degrees of the pole. As of the morning of Thursday, December 22 (3 a.m. EST), the International Arctic Buoy Programme (IABP), operated out of the University of Washington, recorded temperatures from these buoy up to 0<sup>o</sup>C or slightly higher.”</p>
<p>“(…) Right now, Arctic sea ice extent is at the lowest level ever recorded.”</p>
<p><strong>Arctic in need of tlc?</strong></p>
<p>It looks like the Arctic is urgently in need of some tlc – or maybe intensive care would be more fitting.</p>
<p>The<a href="http://arctic.noaa.gov/Report-Card" target="_blank"> Arctic Report Card </a>for 2016 recently published by NOAA should have set alarm bells ringing. Based on environmental observations throughout the Arctic, it notes a 3.5 degree C increase since the beginning of the 20<sup>th</sup> century. The Arctic sea ice minimum extent tied with 2007 for the second lowest value in the satellite record – 33 percent lower than the 1981-2010 average. That sea ice is relatively young and thin compared to the past.</p>

<p><strong>A “shrew”d indicator of Arctic warming</strong></p>
<p>Let me quote what are described as the “Highlights”:</p>
<p>“The average <strong>surface air temperature</strong> for the year ending September 2016 is by far the highest since 1900, and new monthly record highs were recorded for January, February, October and November 2016.</p>
<p>After only modest changes from 2013-2015, <strong>minimum sea ice extent</strong> at the end of summer 2016 tied with 2007 for the second lowest in the satellite record, which started in 1979.</p>
<p><strong>Spring snow cover extent</strong> in the North American Arctic was the lowest in the satellite record, which started in 1967.</p>
<p>In 37 years of <strong>Greenland ice sheet</strong> observations, only one year had earlier onset of spring melting than 2016.</p>
<p>The Arctic Ocean is especially prone to <strong>ocean acidification</strong>, due to water temperatures that are colder than those further south. The short Arctic food chain leaves Arctic marine ecosystems vulnerable to ocean acidification events.</p>
<p>Thawing permafrost releases <strong>carbon </strong>into the atmosphere, whereas greening tundra absorbs atmospheric carbon. Overall, tundra is presently releasing net carbon into the atmosphere.</p>
<p>Small Arctic mammals, such as <strong>shrews</strong>, and their parasites, serve as indicators for present and historical environmental variability. Newly acquired parasites indicate northward shifts of sub-Arctic species and increases in Arctic biodiversity. “</p>

<p><strong>Getting the message across</strong></p>
<p>The <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G0rp6-BEur8&amp;feature=youtu.be" target="_blank">NOAA website sums it up in a video,</a> saying:</p>
<p>“…Rapid and unprecedented rates of change mean that the Arctic  today is home to and a cause for a global suite of trillion dollar impacts ranging from global trade, increased or impeded access to land and ocean resources, changing ecosystems and fisheries, upheaval in subsistence resources, damaged infrastructure due to fragile coastlines, permafrost melt and sea level rise, and national security concerns.</p>
<p>In summary, new observations indicate that the entire, interconnected Arctic environmental system is continuing to be influenced by long-term upward trends in global carbon dioxide and air temperatures, modulated by regional and seasonal variability.”</p>
<p>Margaret Williams, the managing director for <a href="http://wwf.panda.org/what_we_do/where_we_work/arctic/" target="_blank">WWF’s US Arctic programme</a> had this to say:</p>
<p>“We are witnessing changes in the Arctic that will impact generations to come. Warmer temperatures and dwindling sea ice not only threaten the future of Arctic wildlife, but also its local cultures and communities. These changes are impacting our entire planet, causing weather patterns to shift and sea levels to rise. Americans from California to Virginia will come to realize the Arctic’s importance in their daily lives.</p>
<p>“The science cannot be clearer. The Arctic is dramatically changing and the culprit is our growing carbon emissions. The report card is a red flashing light, and now the way forward is to turn away from fossil fuels and embrace clean energy solutions. Protecting the future of the top of the world requires us to reduce emissions all around it.”</p>

<p><strong>Sack the teacher, kill the messenger?</strong></p>
<p>That was her response to the Arctic Report Card. In my school days, the report card was a business to be taken seriously. A bad report meant you were in trouble and would have to smarten up your act or you would be in big trouble with mum and dad.</p>
<p>The question is – who gets the report, and who has to smarten up their act?</p>
<p>This one should make the governments of this world speed up action on mitigating climate change and getting ready for the impacts we will not be able to halt.</p>
<p>Then again, they could just try to get rid of the messengers who come up with the bad news. If your kid’s report card is bad, do you try to improve his performance – or get rid of the teacher who came up with the negative assessment – based on collected data?</p>
<p>I am concerned that the administration in the wings of the US political stage could be more likely to do the latter. As I wrote in the <a href="http://blogs.dw.com/ice/?p=17635">last Ice Blog post</a>, the new Trump administration is threatening to cut funding for climate research. The proposed new Cabinet is well stocked with climate skeptics.</p>
<p><strong>Concern about research</strong></p>
<p>Financial support for the Arctic Report Card is provided by the Arctic Research Program in the NOAA Climate Program Office. Its preparation was  directed by a “US inter-agency editorial team of representatives from the NOAA Pacific marine Environmental Laboratory, NOAA Arctic Resarch Program and the US Army Corps of Engineers, Cold Regions Research and Engineering laboratory.</p>
<p>Yereth Rosen, writing for Alaska Dispatch News, quotes Jeremy Mathis, the director of NOAA’S Arctic research program and one of the editors of the report card.</p>
<p>“The report card this year clearly shows a stronger and more pronounced signal of persistent warming than in any previous year in our observational record”.</p>
<p>“We hope going into the future that our scientists and researchers still have the opportunity to contribute and make possible the summary that we’re able to present. So we have every intention of continuing to publish the Arctic Report Card as we have in the past and pulling together the resources and the right people that allow us to do that”.</p>

<p><strong>Livid and acrimonious</strong></p>
<p>The debate over President Obama’s announcement that he was making a vast area of the Arctic Ocean off-limits to drilling for oil or gas, shows the dilemma of our times – and .. which could influence the living conditions on our planet for generations to come.</p>
<p>Erica Martinson, writing for the <a href="http://www.arcticnow.com/arctic-news/2016/12/20/obama-prohibits-offshore-oil-drilling-in-most-us-arctic-waters/" target="_blank">Alaska Dispatch News,</a> provides interesting insights into the debate for those of us who do not live in Alaska.</p>
<p>She quotes Alaska’s Republican Congressman Don Young, saying he used “livid language” in his response. Obama’s move means “locking away our resources and wuffocating our already weakened economy”.  He goes on “Alaska is not and shuld not be used as the poster child for a pandering environmental agenda”.</p>
<p>Ooh. Livid indeed.</p>
<p>She also quotes Republican Senator Dan Sullivan  as describing the move as “one final Christmas gift to coastal environmental elites”.  So would those be the indigenous communities being forced to relocate because climate changes are destroying their homes, Senator?</p>
<p>The administration, on the other hand, says it is protecting the region from the risk of a catastrophic oil spill, Martinson writes.</p>
<p>It seems to me that Obama’s parting gift goes rather to the “Alaska Native communities of the North Slope” who “depend largely on the natural environment, especially the marine environment, for food and materials”, and to the many endangered and protected species in the area, “including bowhead and fin whales, Pacific walrus, polar bear and others”.</p>

<p><strong>What about the Paris Agreement?</strong></p>
<p>But as well as that regional aspect, the decision not to open up new regions to drilling for oil and gas is in line with the global need to cut fossil fuel emissions to halt the warming of the world.</p>
<p>Jamie Rappaport Clark, CEO of “<a href="http://www.defenders.org/meet-defenders" target="_blank">Defenders of Widife”</a>, puts it:</p>
<p>“It marks the important recognition that we cannot achieve the nation’s climate-change goals if we continue to expand oil and gas development into new, protine environments like the Arctic and Atlantic Oceans”.</p>
<p>This is not just about Alaska, not just about the Arctic, but the future of the planet as a whole.</p>
<p>The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) says 2016 is on track to be the hottest year on record. According to UN estimates, the global temperature in 2016 was 14.88 degrees C &#8211; 1.2 degrees higher than before the industrial revolution began in the mid-19th century.</p>
<p>In an <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2016/12/21/science/arctic-global-warming.html?_r=0" target="_blank">article for the New York Times </a>on December 22, Henry Fountain and John Schwartz quote NOAA’s Arctic Research Program director Jeremy Mathis.</p>
<p>“Warming effects in the Arctic have had a cascading effect through the environment”   “We need people to know and understand that the Arctic is going to have an impact on their lives no matter where they live”. That includes the oil-industry-friendly and climate skeptical team that is set to enter the White House in the New Year,</p>

<p>So when I propose a toast to a cool Arctic in 2017, I am not just thinking of my friends in the high north. For all our sakes, we have to kick our fossil fuel habits, save energy and cut the emissions which keep the giant refrigerator that helps make our world a viable place to live well chilled.</p>
