Experimental drone video production over Wannsee

As part of the research in the MultiDrone Project, one of our consortiums investigates how drones can support journalistic work in an innovative way. The project plan foresees a set of evaluation scenarios due in the third project year, when the custom-made MultiDrone UAVs are ready to fly. In order to gain more experience with hands on drone-cinematography until then, DW has started experimenting with off-the-shelf drones. One of those experiments was the trip to the Meteora region in Greece, in August 2018. There, a DW-team used three drones (Mavic Pro, Mavic Air, Inspire 2) to closely follow two climbers exploring the wonderful mountain peaks in the area.

In October 2018, the project took it a step closer to the actual MultiDrone production scenario: A live rowing regatta.

Digger – Deepfake Detection

Digger - Deepfake Detection

When we cannot trust our eyes and ears anymore, then what can we trust?

Deepfakes are hyper-realistic video forgeries in which people say or do things they’ve never actually said or done. The visual quality of deepfakes will soon become so flawless that it will be hard to make a judgement of veracity by mere visual verification.

Let’s stay in touch! DW Innovation moves on LinkedIn

DW Innovation moves on LinkedIn

Dear all,

we’re moving house on LinkedIn. From our old ‘persona’ profile called DW (first name) Innovation (last name) to a proper showcase page directly connected to Deutsche Welle.

We’ve announced this before and thus thought we could delete the old profile worry-free, but it turns out our message didn’t come through to many of you.

That’s a pity, because we’d really love to stay connected with you all! To exchange thoughts, findings and knowledge, share concepts on innovation in media – and maybe to help each other find that perfect new team member.

Our old profile will be deleted on March 25th. Therefore we want to make a last shout out in order to turn our ‘old connections’ into new followers:

  1. Please go to linkedin.com/showcase/dw-innovation
  2. hit that follow button…
  3. and stay in touch with us!

We’re looking forward to seeing you there!

All the best,
DW Innovation

V4Design: Processing Traditional Media Assets For Interactive Immersive Experiences

woman_vr_headset

Wouldn’t it be great to experience the Beatles play their first Hamburg gig from the perspective of a fan who danced in the front row? Or witness the fall of the Berlin Wall in a truly immersive way? The bad news: That’s still kind of tricky. The good news: It’s not impossible, and the V4Design consortium has been working on technical solutions for a full year now.

Project LIMES: The Future of Augmented, Interactive Live Streaming

limes_keyvisual_logo

With the arrival of high-end smart device cameras, sophisticated gimbals, 4G, and platforms like Twitch or Facebook Live, video live streaming has become immensely popular. Journalists have used the technology to cover breaking news right when and where they are breaking, do spontaneous interviews on a popular social media platform, or cover that really long, yet potentially important press conference both in full and on a budget. Unfortunately, journalistic live streams run the risk of becoming rather boring after a while. They might be exclusive, but they also lack dramaturgy, editing, extra features – which is why viewers tend to tune out. But it doesn’t have to be like that. Journalistic livestreams could be more compelling, and we’ve just started a new DNI project that is ready to tackle the challenge: LIMES, short for Livestreaming & Mixed Reality Management System.

Vertical Video: 5 Takeaways from the DW Lab

igvt_lab_2018

DW’s first vertical video story on Instagram

On June 20th, Instagram launched its new streaming video platform, IGTV. Content on the platform will be longer than typical Instagram posts or stories – up to 60 minutes – and, most importantly, video will be vertical only! So what content works well in vertical? And how can news outlets best produce videos that are “vertical first”? DW’s social media department, together with the DW Lab, embarked on a two-week-long experiment with vertical video. Here are five of our most important takeaways.
