Meet us @ Global MIL Week
Global Media and Information Literacy Week 2016
When: October 31st – November 6th
Where: University of Sao Paulo, Sao Paulo, Brasil
What is it?
Launched in 2012 the Global Media and Information Literacy (MIL) Week is the annual highlight event for a number of worldwide initiatives hosted and coordinated by UNESCO. It includes the Media and Information Literacy and Intercultural Dialogue Conference (MILID) as well as the first General Assembly of the Global Alliance for Partnerships on Media and Information Literacy (GAPMIL). It it furthermore the stage for the Global MIL Awards honouring innovative media and information literacy related projects and activities.
Why are we there?
In a “post-facts world, where people are not necessarily interested in facts” but rather “following their feelings” – a statement made by German chancellor Angela Merkel – Media and Information Literacy is more important than ever. Providing people with knowledge and tools to better understand complex media environments, to fact check opinions or to combat online hate speech and cyberbullying is vital to prevent societies from drifting towards extremes.
As quite a few of our DW Innovation projects deal with technologies that will allow journalists and media users to better navigate, analyse and verify information streams, we are excited of being part of IMIL. We were offered the opportunity to present context and results of our related research and development from YourDataStories, Newsstream, Reveal, InVid or Multisensor at the dedicated News Media session on Friday, November 4th, 14:00. Wilfried Runde, Head of DW Innovation Projects, will be part of this panel talking about “Handling the truth – News in a post-fact world”.
Furthermore, we are teaming-up with DW Akademie’s Media and Information Literacy experts, who are currently involved in a number of MIL projects in developing countries. Dennis Reineck, Project Manager Research and Evaluation at DW Akademie, provides insights from these projects in his presentation „What are we talking about? The challenge of defining and measuring Media and Information Literacy“ scheduled Thursday, November 3rd, 13:15. (The full program can be found here.)
Do not hesitate to get in touch with both Wilfried and Dennis before or after the event if you have any questions. They will be happy to discuss our work with you. Follow the event via the official hashtag #MILweek2016 or follow us directly via @DW_Innovation.
