The CoSyne project (Multilingual Content Synchronization with wikis), in which Deutsche Welle Innovation takes part, is nearing its end. CoSyne targets to find a solution to the current problem of comparing and updating wiki pages on the same subject in different language versions.

Access to European Television Heritage XL
EUscreenXL aggregates a comprehensive amount of professional audiovisual content provided by European broadcasters and television archives and makes it accessible. Also through the European digital culture portal, Europeana.
The EUscreen project has put more than 30.000 televisual items online to make historical audiovisual content widely accessible. The project’s successor, EUscreenXL, will invest even more in online accessibility of European Television Heritage. It will extend the core collection for another 20.000 high quality TV items and it will make more than 1.000.000 metadata sets of the consortiums 22 content partners’ collections searchable and accessible on Europeana to serve broadcast professionals, media researchers and the general public.
The consortium is coordinated by the University of Utrecht and brings together 32 partners from 21 EU member states.
Deutsche Welle is a content partner and additionally contributes to validation and dissemination.
The project runs from Mar 2013 – Feb 2016.

With a boom in tools and apps to generate infographics and more, this could be changing. One such tool is Datawrapper, developed by Deutsche Welle New Media and one of the 2012 Winners of African News Innovation Challenge (ANIC). It is a prime example of getting a good working and scalable product out of an externally funded project.
“It’s a tool for getting started with data-driven journalism,” says Mirko Lorenz who is the driving force behind the project and part of the innovation team of new media. “We didn’t just want to make showy charts, it’s really about the right diagram for the data at hand.”

Deutsche Welle is Germany’s international public service broadcaster.
Deutsche Welle promotes the understanding of Germany as an independent nation with its roots in European culture. DW offers a full range of television, radio and online services and is known for its in-depth, reliable news and information in 30 languages – including Arabic and Kiswahili, Indonesian and Urdu, Russian and Spanish, German and English.
Since the late 1990s Deutsche Welle Innovation Team has successfully participated in more than twenty nationally and internationally funded R&D projects with partners such as the BBC, Yahoo, Oxford University and Fraunhofer Institute. Always with a strong focus on fostering Journalism & Technology the projects have been covering topics ranging from mobile broadcasting technologies towards novel search techniques in social networks, cloud services, and language processing.

Raising general awareness for an EU funded project
In research projects dissemination always has a low priority at the start and a high priority in the end of the project. But how do we raise the interest of a larger public for such complex technologies?
For Arcomem we disseminate the project in specialist target groups that understand what we are talking about but also raise general awareness on the necessity of archiving social media content. Why should we keep our copy of twitter and facebook? And how important is the user generated content that we find in social media?
The Innovation team has the skills and tools to write story lines, make story boards and produce animated movies. For Arcomem we have made the following movie, based on our media use case in the Arcomem project, raising awareness for the need of digital preservation of social media.

Smart search in the social web
SocialSensor is about multimedia indexing and search in the Social Web. Content from social networks such as Twitter tweets are becoming increasingly important for news and infotainment purposes. For journalists, social media is often the only source of information in situations where other access is limited (e.g. Arab spring, conflict in Syria). But how can a journalist make sure not to miss any relevant information?
With regard to news, SocialSensor aims for developing a reliable news and trend detection algorithm. The system will identify key influentials in social networks and supports the verification of social media content.

Intelligent archive of the social web
ARCOMEM is about memory institutions such as archives, museums, and libraries in the age of the Social Web. Memory institutions are more important now than ever: as we face greater economic and environmental challenges we need our understanding of the past to help us navigate to a sustainable future.
Which contributions of the social web will stay available in the future and what will be preserved? And how will they be accessible and explorable for users? ARCOMEM creates tools which helps archivists to exploit the social web.
