Europe

DW (Arabia 2) has been broadcasting DW’s Arabic programming for Arabic-speaking audiences in Western Europe via satellite partner SES Astra since December. Specially developed news and educational programming from German public broadcasters ARD and ZDF is now also being included on the channel. Target viewers for DW (Arabia 2) are Arabic-speaking refugees and immigrants currently in Western Europe who can benefit from independent journalism and important cultural information.

South America

Brazilian TV broadcaster Climatempo will be carrying DW’s Futurando and Camarote.21 starting in April 2016and available with providers like SKY, GVT, Oi and Samsung TV apps. Climatempo’s technical range of 9 million households will significantly increase the presence of  these regionally tailored programs in Brazil. Climatempo’s website will also be integrating DW’s Portuguese for Brazil online content.

Africa

DW is increasing its presence in West Africa with numerous new partnerships in Niger and Burkina Faso. In Niger, TV Anfani is now broadcasting DW’s English channel. The expanded partnership also marks 20 years of broadcasting cooperation, beginning in 1996 between Radio Anfani and DW. Additionally, Shukrah FM and Radio Kaocen are now broadcasting DW’s Hausa and French radio programming to radio listeners in Niger. In neighboring Burkina Faso, the TV provider Burkina Info is now broadcasting DW’s English channel. And for the first time in the Loroum region of the country, DW’s French radio programming will be available via programming partner Radio La Voix du Loroum.

In South Africa, the motor sports channel Ignition TV and the business news channel Business Day TV from the Times Media Group are now carrying select DW programming.

A personal side to the refugee crisis

The massive influx of refugees into Europe presents a challenge for journalists to cover a story that has been saturated in the European media and somehow lost the human element behind the noise of statistics and politics. The voice of refugees themselves can become lost in the clamor and seeing their stories close up and first hand delivers a poignant and valuable perspective.

DW’s Documentaries and Reports is adding a personal angle to the refugee story with #MyEscape, a documentary special that shares what it is like to come to Europe as a refugee. Using videos and photos that refugees took themselves along the way combined with revealing interviews, #MyEscape allows the refugees to tell this important story in their own words.

The international and cultural expertise at DW played a huge role in conducting follow-up interviews in the refugees languages and in establishing an atmosphere of trust where people felt comfortable telling their stories.

#My Escape will air starting February 13 and is produced in cooperation with WDR and Berlin Producers.

The DW app has generated over 1 million downloads in the first six months since its release. The app is also among the top-ranking news apps in the Google Play Store charts for target markets like Egypt, Nigeria, Ghana and Pakistan.

South America

Chile’s leading television channel, T13, is a new DW partner and the channel’s website now includes Spanish news content from DW. T13’s is one of the most trusted sources of news in the Chilean media landscape and their online presence reflects this standard of quality. The website currently records over 5 million users and is expanding on mobile devices and social media.

Asia

DW’s English channel is now available on the Bangladeshi multi-system provider DigiJadoo as a part of its basic package. The multi-system provider serves all major cities in Bangladesh and has over 7 million subscribers.

DW is now available on three cable providers in Taiwan. NCDT, NTC-TWT and New Changhua Cable provide three provinces with international channels.

America

DW’s English channel has a new full-time partner in the USA. Ventura Broadcasting based in Fresno, California will be providing the channel on its free-to-air service to around 100,000 households.

Mobile

Downloads for the DW app have grown immensely in recent months. The number of total downloads is currently at around 850,000 – a big leap from 250,000 in September. The app was  launched in June to accompany the launch of DW’s international news channel.

Middle East

A campaign for DW Arabia  is showing a lot of success in Morocco, Egypt and Iraq, the three largest media markets in the Arab world. Indicators include a video trailer on YouTube and Facebook that already has over 1 million views. The campaign highlights the credibility and transparency of DW’s programming against other broadcasters, whose reporting can fall into sensationalism. DW Arabia also explores taboos in the Arab world, which are avoided by other regional broadcasters. The “Discover the Difference” campaign will run until the end of the year.

Asia

DW has a new partner in Indonesia. Cable provider Dens TV is now carrying the complete program of DW’s English channel for audiences in Jakarta.

Africa
The news websites Focus Guinée und Guinée Signal are now DW partners for online content in French. The radio stations RTCT, Radio Télévision Communautaire Oasis and Radio Télévision Communautaire Ondese are now DW partners in Congo. They are broadcasting DW’s radio program daily in French and Kiswahili.

R2A Radio Azur in Togo is now broadcasting Learning by Ear, as well as the morning and evening shows in French and the evening show in Hausa.

In Cameroon, DW has three new partners for TV and radio. TV+ Cameroun will be including DW’s English channel in its portfolio, Canal2 will be broadcasting select programs like Made in Germany and Conflict Zone and CBS will broadcasting radio programs like Learning by Ear and AfricaLink.

UTV Ghana and Light TV are now DW partners as well, broadcasting programs like Kick Off! and Business Brief. Also in Ghana, Vision 1 is now broadcasting DW’s radio program AfricaLink as part of its lineup.

North America
DW is now working with MHz Networks in North America to distribute the English channel DW. MHz will now be broadcasting a three-hour block of DW from 15:00 to 18:00 (Eastern Time), which is picked up by DirectTV, more than 31 PBS stations and many other cable networks. It’s available in markets like New York, Los Angeles and Chicago and reaches more than 40 million households.

Online
DW will be one of the first media companies to be included in Apple News with its own channel. The app has been included in the iOS9 launch.

Asia
The Indonesian website kompas.com is a new DW partner. Kompas will be integrated DW’s online content in Indonesian to its portfolio. It’s the 11th most popular website in Indonesia with 20 million active users and 40 million page impressions per month.

Europe
As part of a new coproduction, DW’s award-winning lifestyle program Euromaxx is now available in Lithuanian and broadcast on the public broadcaster LRT. DW’s Arts.21 is also being produced and broadcast by LRT in Lithuanian.
