Since the launch of DW News, Asia has taken a larger focus due to its diverse and rapidly-growing media markets.

A big piece of DW’s strategy is collaborating with partners in target regions. By building strong partnerships from the ground up, DW can reach more people across Asia with programming that speaks to them.

Representatives from DW are currently in Singapore at the Asia TV & Forum Market (ATF) to explore the potential for growth in content markets across Asia. The event is one of the largest of its kind in Asia and presents a huge opportunity for DW to open new doors and become more visible.

To open doors with audiences, DW develops regionally-tailored co-productions with local partners. Two recent deals with partners in India and Vietnam are the latest advancements for DW in Asia.

The Indian public broadcaster Prasar Bharati and the Vietnamese state broadcaster VTV both signed memorandums of understanding (MOU) to work on co-productions in the near future.

Included in the MOU with Prasar Bharati are the co-production of DW’s award-winning lifestyle show Euromaxx in Hindi and dubbing the Hindi science program Manthan into other Indian languages.

“This opens a new chapter in the Indo-German relationship where public broadcasting is concerned,” said Prasar Bharati CEO Jawhar Sircar. “We have a special relationship with Deutsche Welle and we hope it will lead to more mutually beneficial broadcasting collaborations.”

The MOU with VTV will involve co-producing a new science magazine program. Since 2013, DW has been providing Vietnamese subtitled versions of nine shows including the popular Global 3000 and In Good Shape. Since March 2015, VTV has also packaged and broadcasted a Vietnamese version of Euromaxx. VTV has also broadcast DW’s English-language channel in its entirety since 2006.

Producing content that connects with audiences in diverse markets around the world requires more than a one-size-fits-all strategy. DW has always understood this and sets an example for international cooperation in broadcasting that diversifies programming and brings new ideas and perspectives to viewers.

DW is now available on the OTT platform YuppTV, which is comparable to portals like Hulu and Netflix. YuppTV will be including DW in its channel lineup and has more than 2 million registered users in India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal and Bhutan.
DW is now also being offered by the first IPTV provider in Nepal. New IT Venture (NITV) is the largest Internet provider and currently the only IPTV provider in Nepal with plans to expand nationwide.
The Mongolian broadcaster TM-TV will now be including Made in Germany, Global 3000, Drive It, Discover Germany and Euromaxx in its program.

Latin America
La Nación Chile has recently been added as a new online partner for DW. Since 2010, the renowned newspaper has been available as an online-only news source. It receives an average of 1.8 page visits per month and is among the most-visited websites in Chile. La Nación will be syndicating DW content including full articles.

The largest cable television provider in Israel, HOT, is a new DW broadcasting partner and is including the flagship channel DW in its basic programming package. The partnership marks DW’s first major appearance on the Israeli television market. DW is available in a news package next to major international news brands such as the BBC, Sky News, Fox News, France 24, Euronews, CCTV1 and NHK World. Along with over 800,000 cable subscribers, HOT also provides Internet and telephone services for a combined 1,3 million households. Around 200 national and international channels are provided by HOT, including many exclusive channels that aren’t available with the competing Israeli provider YES.

Asia

DW’s flagship English channel is now available on IPTV and Satellite in India via Airtel, a major global telecommunications company based in Delhi. DW is included in Airtel’s IPTV basic service package and is also with six DTH satellite programming packages. Airtel operates in 20 countries in South Asia and Africa and is the largest mobile operator in South Asia. Through this new partnership, DW has the potential to reach an audience of 4 million viewers in India.

DW’s Mongolian partner MNBC is now broadcasting DW in German via a DVB-T2 signal. MNBC is the first provider of second-generation digital broadcasting in Mongolian and services the capital city Ulaanbaatar with local and international channels on pay TV.

DW is now broadcasting digitally in Afghanistan via the digital service OQAAB. The contract allows for the broadcast of DW’s complete program.

Latin America

DW (Latinoamérica) is now available on IPTV in Mexico via the pay TV provider AXTEL. AXTEL currently has 90,000 subscribers in Mexico’s largest cities including Mexico City, Cuidad Juarez, Monterrey, and Puebla. The Spanish-language programming from DW (Latinoamérica) is included in the ULTRA programming package.

DW news in 12 languages are included in the newly-launched MSN news apps. This makes online content from DW not only available on all Windows mobile handsets and msn.com, but also expands the reach to iOS and Android devices.

Asia
Onneshon is now available in India and Bangladesh. The science show that is broadcast in Bengali will be made available in Eastern India on Doordarshan Bangla (DD Bangla).

Europe
A weekly version of Euromaxx is now being produced and broadcast in Ukrainian. The new adaptation of the classic show is being produced in cooperation with ZIK-TV, with which DW has been working with since the beginning of 2014. ZIK-TV also rebroadcasts Geofaktor and Focus on Europe.

South America
The culture magazine Camorote.21 is now being broadcast nationwide in Brazil by TV Brasil. The public broadcaster is part of the EBC (Empresa brasileira de comunicação) and focuses on informational and cultural programming.

A new deal between DW and the Indian public service broadcaster, Doordarshan (DD), is a groundbreaking step towards bringing Indian television to Europe. For the first time in its 55 years of operation, DD will be available via a free-to-air DTH service outside of India. The deal opens the door to a symbiotic distribution model with which DD India, DD’s international channel, will be broadcast in Europe using DW’s satellite capacity and in exchange, DW will be broadcast using the satellite capacity of DD Freedish in India.

The exchange of capacities is good for both sides and a positive development in a market where using partners is essential to success. Other international broadcasters like France 24 have also recently signed distribution contracts using DD broadcasting facilities, but unlike with DW, it was a one way deal with no provision for rebroadcasting DD content in return.

Since its launch in 1995, DD India has made many attempts at broadcasting to international audiences and even paid to uplink the channel to satellites. But the lack of any downlink agreements continually kept the channel from being broadcast. DD India’s mission is to “build bridges of communication to Indians living abroad and showcase the real India.” The deal with DW will give DD India the potential to reach 120 million homes abroad. DW will reach a potential 25.5 million homes in India via DD Freedish.

The deal was announced in a joint press conference in New Delhi attended by DW representatives, officials from the German embassy, and the CEO of Prasar Bharati, which operates DD. DD India plans to start broadcasting internationally via the Hotbird 13b satellite in October.
