Have you had your breasts checked?
The first Breast Cancer Awareness Month was conceived back in 1985 in the United States. It has since become a tradition in many countries worldwide to designate the month of October for education and awareness raising programs about the importance of early detection and treatment of breast cancer as well as palliative care.
Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women worldwide, both in developed and developing countries. In low and middle-income countries, where the majority of deaths occur, breast cancer cases have been rising steadily with increased life expectancy and urbanization, and the adoption of western lifestyles.
Sadly though, breast cancer amongst women in low and middle-income countries is often diagnosed too late mainly due to the lack of awareness on early detection and barriers to health services. In some societies, discussing breast cancer may also be culturally taboo.
Are there awareness programs in your countries that encourage you to regularly examine yourself or visit your gynae for early detection? Have you also encouraged other female friends and family members to do so?
We are looking forward to reading your comments!
