  • San Diego teen receives award, recognition for volunteer efforts benefiting PCI

Liza Gurtin , a 17-year-old San Diego high school
student (pictured above), is one of five recipients
who was honored with the prestigious
Diller Teen Tikkun Olam Award in August 2011. She
was recognized for her volunteer efforts on behalf of
PCI’s Walk for Water, which supported our clean water
projects and lifesaving programs in Tanzania and
    around the world.

A recipient of the Presidential Community Service
Award, Liza has led or participated in dozens of
community service projects, all of which are prelude
to her current passion — bringing clean, safe water
to thousands of impoverished families whose young
daughters cannot attend school because they spend
their days walking countless miles, for hours on end,
to retrieve water needed for their survival. Liza was
a pivotal organizer and advocate on behalf of PCI’s
Walk for Water—a 5K walk where participants carry
buckets of water simulating the conditions that
women and children around the globe endure daily.

Nearly 125 teens from across the state of California
were nominated and considered for this impressive
award —five recipients were chosen to each receive
$36,000. Ms. Gurtin will be donating a majority of
her award back to PCI for its clean water programs
    in Ethiopia
