What does it take for a woman in Pakistan to leave her house, take her children along and attend a political rally? I say, more than commitment. Apart from support from the men of her house, she needs to feel safe, among men, that is.

The changing Pakistani woman

I met them at a coffee shop. They were already waiting for me when I entered. The steam from the four cups of coffee on their table made patterns in the air. Coffee  had just been served and I knew I wasn’t late.

Let us work with respect

This woman has set up a food cart in front of a government office in Lahore- by covering her face she says people will respect her.

 

As the nation mourned the killing of at least six female polio workers in the north-western and southern provinces, the Pakistani government celebrated its National Working Women’s Day on December 22. At least two women escaped target killing in the southern Punjab province a few days later.

‘You belong to me’

If you live in a tribal area in Pakistan, you are a woman, you are not educated or financially independent and the men in your family are the sovereign decision makers, then your chances of being victimized by an eccentric decision taken by a group of elderly men from your tribe, who you might not even know, are huge.

‘Journalism is no business, it is a responsibility’

Ayesha Hasan, a young woman reporter from Pakistan, wants to be taken seriously in her profession, which is dominated by males in her country. Hasan is being sponsored by the Friedrich Ebert Foundation and is currently doing an internship at the Deutsche Welle. She speaks to DW’s Martina Bertram about her future plans.

DW: Pakistan is an Islamic republic. How difficult is it to write about religious themes?
