Women Talk Online

A forum for women to talk to women

Comments of the Week

Sad, but true. I am a 15 year old girl from punjab. Condition of women is truly worth criticizing in India. Though a lot of people try to make a change, but there doesn’t seem to be any effect on thinking of people. I just don’t understand why no one is ready to accept that women deserve equal freedom and justice just like men. India is the place where we people qorship so many female Gods, and on the other hand, we are the same people who think that a woman’s freedom should be limited to the four walls of the house. If our constitution provides us equal rights, then do people expect us to do what they say?
Female foeticide is increasing, cases of women sucides and rape are soaring high with each passing day. People think that women are Just the dirt of their feet. They treat women just like disposable glasses, use and throw. I hope, that some day, women will get to their actual position… Amen. (Comment on the website, September 28, 2015)

Nargis Laskar The phrase “honour killing” is an oxymoron. A contradiction in terms. There is no honour in killing. It is a plain and simple murder. This happens due to the believe in feudal and patriarchal views that women don’t have right to decide for themselves. It implies that the family and the society think the body and self of a woman is by owned by them. Thus, first they enslave her, dehumanise her and then they physically eliminate her not for stealing condom but for being a woman, in ultimate analysis. (Facebook, September 29)

Does Afghanistan really want its women?

Women who dare to love, to pursue a career and women who refuse to be tied down by the conservative society are simply eliminated in Afghanistan.  To this day, tribal courts and the Taliban use the Sharia (Islamic law) and order punishments such as stoning and executions.  With a massive number of women falling prey to antiquated social customs, the obvious question is: does Afghanistan really want its women?
