Afghanistan’s ‘hill of widows’ live in a world apart

The first women settled on this stony slope outside Kabul in the 1990s hoping to escape the stigma those like them are forced to endure.
Today it is known as Afghanistan’s ‘hill of widows’, home to a cluster of women who have eked out independence in a society that shuns and condemns them as immoral.

Freshta Karim is 25 years old. She is from Kabul, Afghanistan. Her family moved to Pakistan after the Taliban took power but she remained in Afghanistan until 2002. Later she went to Britain to study.

A few days ago unknown gunmen killed five female Afghan guards working at an airport in southern Kandahar. The killing which took place on Saturday, December 17 highlightes the continuing threat faced by women working outside of the home in Afghanistan. The women had received death threats from people opposed to women in the workforce.

Malala Yousafzai said it, and it is true. Education is a right that is under threat by the Taliban in Pakistan. Police often have to stand guard outside schools. In the past the Taliban has attacked schools and killed children and teachers were killed. It could happen again any time. In Pakistan: education is an act of courage. See more here!
