Sportswomen need the media to make it big

The  Twenty20 cricket world cup always makes it to the front pages. It is followed almost religiously by its fan base. Men and women watch the games with the intense fervour. But few know that the woman’s Twenty20 tournament takes place around the same time every year. The reason is that we see, hear or read very little about most of the women’s sports activities in media.

Mary Kom: at the London Olympics

When in 2000 at Sydney, weightlifter Karnam Malleswari became India’s first woman Olympic medalist, it was indeed a historic moment. Two decades later, several Indian women athletes are going to London with a dream of shattering Malleswari’s bronze effort.  Boxer Mangte Chungneijang Mary Kom or Mary Kom, as she is popularly known, is the brightest of them all.
