Around three million residents call Kenya’s capital of Nairobi home. Scarcely more than a century old, the city is rich in contrasts. Districts filled with heavily guarded villas lie not far from the slum of Kibera, where an estimated 800,000 people live without electricity, water or sanitary facilities. Unemployment is high, but Nairobi is still considered a center of business and culture. The city is home to three universities covering all areas of study. Around 50,000 students are enrolled at the two largest universities, the University of Nairobi and Kenyatta University. Student unrest in recent years led officials to close universities on multiple occasions. Protestors cited the undue influence of politicians in student affairs, including in student elections.
