Renewable Future
The UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) came out with a report recently that said renewable energy could make up 77% of the entire world’s energy needs by the year 2050. Yes, 77%! If that happened, we would slash one-third of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions and hold global temperatures under 2 degrees celsius.
The study included a series of renewable energy forms that could contribute to a very green future: solar, hydropower, wind, geothermal, and bioenergy. So what’s the catch? Well, of course, it all depends on politics and policy. According to the study, each country has to fight political obstacles and complications to make sure environmentalism is a top priority.
What are the obstacles and complications in your country that are preventing good climate policy?
Sweet (and clean!) ride
It’s been called “sexy muscular perfection” and “the bomb” by industry magazines: it’s the new Lito Sora motorcycle by Canadian company Lito Green Motion. With its sleek black and steel design and it’s powerful features, even skeptics seem to be won over by the Lito Sora.
Appearances aside, this motorbike packs a punch when it comes to performance, too. The company says the Lito Sora can go 300 km (185 miles) between recharges thanks to its 12kWh lithium battery. So you could zip through the streets for days at a time without ever having to charge up. It’s fast too–it can go up to 200 km/h (or 125 mph). There’s even a GPS system that’s already integrated into the bike’s management system: not only do you get directions, the Lito Sora tells you how much power you need to get there, too.
Who knew electric could look so good?
GLOBAL IDEAS goes HD
The GLOBAL IDEAS project has been running for nearly one and a half years now. And if there’s one thing our climate reporters have learned in this time it’s that climate change is super-complex and that important but small details are easy to miss. So, as a first step in the way to get the whole picture more accurately we have started to put on better goggles – and equipped our cameras with sharper vision.
Starting today we’ll put online video footage from our reporters in High Definition quality. We hope to be following this up very soon with our first GLOBAL IDEAS documentary that you can watch online in HD.
For starters here’s some HD footage of the amazing biodiversity our reporters came across on their recent trip to Costa Rica:
And here another one from Madagascar:
Women for Climate Change
Happy Mother’s Day to all the moms in the world! Since we’re celebrating mothers today, we thought we’d share a cool initiative in Australia called “1 Million Women”. The campaign strives to inspire 1 million women to fight climate change by slashing 1 million tons of CO2. So that means each women who joins the cause would reduce her own CO2 emissions by 1 ton.
All the women who join the campaign get tips on how to cut their carbon footprints and help tracking their progress along the way. The more than 50 daily tips include things like staying away from plastic bags or bottles, cutting down on food waste and reducing your meat intake. You can check out some of the women’s stories who have joined on the campaign’s Youtube page.
Reduce your electricity consumption by social media
Are you also wondering, why your electricity bills are so high? Probably you are not paying enough attention on your energy saving opportunities. The social network “welectricity” can help you understand what you could do better. It allows you to contribute your information on the energy consumption habits and to compare them with your friends. This idea made welectricity one of the top 10 ideas that had been put forward in the General Electric ECOmagination global contest. GLOBAL IDEAS has met the founder of welectricity, Herbert Samuel.
