This month has seen two DW documentaries winning prestigious European awards. “Machine Music – Four Decades of German Electronic and Dance Music” took home a Golden Dolphin at the Cannes Corporate Media & TV Awards. Another documentary with a musical focus, “Schumann at Pier2,” won the Czech Television Prize.

“Machine Music” is all about the evolution of electronic pop music in Germany. The two-part film, by Reiner Schild and Anja Freyhoff-King, starts with German pioneer Kraftwerk in the 1970s and goes on to show the influence of German groups on international acts like Depeche Mode and Pet Shop Boys.

The Golden Dolphin is the fourth award for “Machine Music,” which was released in 2010 as part of the Deutsche Beats project.

“Schumman at Pier2” is shaping up to follow in the footsteps of “Machine Music.” “Schumann” director Christian Berger and producer Bernhard Fleischer accepted the Czech Television Prize in Prague last week.

“Schumann at Pier2” is a modern take on the four symphonies made by legendary composer Robert Schumann. The narrative follows Estonian-American conductor Paavo Järvi and members of the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen as they play at a converted shipyard.

This Friday (October 26) sees the official release event for “Schumann at Pier2” at Kino International in Berlin. Audiences will be able to watch the documentary on DW as well as the European cultural channel Arte starting in November. Berlin-based C Major Entertainment plans to sell a DVD box set including recordings by the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen.

With its latest webdoc, DW invites children young and old to explore the underwater world in the South Pacific with Namati – a young coral off the coast of Vanuatu. Namati’s World is the latest webdoc from the Global Ideas team. It offers spectacular underwater video footage and a story full of suspense. Namati tells the story of her amazing experiences off the coast of Pele Island in the Pacific archipelago nation of Vanuatu. At 114 years of age, Namati is still a child. Brain corals can live to be over a thousand years old – that is, if they can withstand the effects of global climate change such as the warming of the world’s oceans.

 

 

DW has created a new show in Portuguese which was premiered for Rede Minas viewers in Brazil on September 15. Futurando will provide a weekly look at the latest sci-tech and environment news.

DW reporters will investigate the latest ideas and bold experiments designed to make the world a better place. Topics range from space research to medi-cal innovations along with ways to create sustainable cities in the face of climate change.

Futurando brings you the faces behind these projects, whether they have already been implemented or are still just ideas. You’ll get to meet interna-tionally renowned researchers while DW reporters explore their work and explain how it can impact our daily lives.

 

The program pays special attention to Brazilian researchers and dives into the issues stirring debate in Brazil.

“We have been looking to expand our presence in Brazil by working with local partners and developing even more high-quality multimedia content – and Futurando is a great next step,” says Rodrigo Rimon Abdelmalack, Head of the Brazilian Editorial Department at Deutsche Welle. “With Rede Minas, we have also found a partner that reflects our standards of quality and jour-nalistic excellence.”

Viewers who don’t have Rede Minas will still be able to tune in. Episodes will be available on demand at dw.de/futurando, along with articles that go into the week’s topics in greater depth.

DW will be broadcasting its first television series in Hindi starting September 8. Manthan will cover science, technology, the environment and medicine and will be shown every Saturday at 10:30 a.m. on Doordarshan National (DD-1) in India.

“This is a milestone for DW in India,” said Petra Schneider, DW’s Director of
Distribution. “We have been broadcasting in Hindi for nearly 50 years now and providing television programming with a local emphasis was a logical next step.”

Manthan is being produced by DW’s Hindi team in Bonn and will cover all aspects of science and technology – with a special focus on the latest developments in Germany and Europe. The show anchor is Isha Bhatia from Chandigarh.

In addition to presenting the latest scientific developments, the host will also
report on the different aspects of everyday life in Germany and comment on
the sometimes surprising differences between Germany and their home country.

Doordarshan is India’s public broadcaster with more than 26 satellite channels and 1,135 local terrestrial transmitting stations. It provides television services to more than 140 million homes in India. In addition, the DD DTH platform, a free-to-air service, is received in more than 10 million homes.

DD National or DD1 is Doordarshan’s flagship channel and the most widely
available terrestrial television channel in India.

DW recently completed a contest to get users to submit ideas for new content for its educational series Learning by Ear. The feedback was astounding – and now the winners are in. The jury has now come up with a list of the 10 best, incuding the winner from Togo. Bouloufèi Bèwèzima and a group from the club “A nous la planète” wrote a story called “A long way home” about two trafficked boys who undertake an exhausting march to rejoin their family.
