DW’s distribution team has added over 30 new partners from five countries in Latin America after a large television trade show in Colombia. Since February 2012 the team has also succeeded in more than doubling the number of programs acquired from local partners, including the much in-demand program Visión Futuro. This constantly expanding cooperation should continue to open new doors for DW in the region.
Asia
DW’s marketing campaign in Afghanistan for Learning by Ear has been a huge success. Interest far exceeded expectations with over 2 million calls within a few weeks. The target audience was drawn in by well-directed strategies like an animated TV spot along with a print and text messaging campaign that conveyed the value of DW’s free on-demand programming.
Africa
Content from DW will now be available on the very popular Pan-African online news and information platform AllAfrica, which offers content in French and English from over 130 news sites coming out of almost every African country. DW’s regionalized content for Africa will become a part of AllAfrica’s commitment to quality journalism that seeks to promote learning and political awareness.
Online
A new language has joined DW’s multimedia catalog. Ukrainian was added to the audio, video and photo content of DW’s online Media Center in March. DW’s Media Center now offers content in a total of 15 languages.

Latin America
Major developments in Mexico, where the culture TV channel ARTVC will be integrating several DW programs into its lineup, including Euromaxx, Enlaces, Visión Futuro, Reporteros en el mundo. ARTVC reaches around 5 million subscribers. In addition, public broadcasters in the states of Mexico (Sistema Mexiquensa de Radio y Televisión), Morelia (Sistema Michoacano de Radio y Telvisión) and Hidalgo (Radio y Televisión de Hidalgo) will be broadcasting DW’s Spanish program – DW (Latnoamérica), making it available to around 45 million potential viewers.
DW also has a new partner in Bolivia with the cable provider Sistema de Radio y Televisión Agüaragüe. This new partnership will make DW (Latinoamérica) available in Tarija, in the southern part of the country.
Online
The DW Media Center has expanded with four new languages – including Chinese, Hindi, Kiswahili and Turkish. The DW Media Center offers users direct access to pictures, audio and video material from DW.
Asia
Afghan TV is now a partner for DW in Pakistan and Afghanistan. The station is based in Islamabad and broadcasts to Afghanistan as well as for the around 1.5 million Afghani immigrants living in Pakistan. Along with programming in Dari and Pashtu, Afghan TV will also be broadcasting a selection of DW programming in English.
DW is now available nationwide in New Zealand, due to a change in operations from a trusted partner. Triangle TV is becoming Face TV and is now part of Sky TV via the Optus D1 satellite. Face TV will be available in around 175,000 households in New Zealand and will be integrating several hours of DW programming into its lineup. Elshinta Televisi, a private television station in Jakarta, has begun broadcasting Drive It! As well as the Indonesian TV program Inovator. Along with terrestrial satellite, Elshinta TV is also available via cable and IPTV.
DW Akademie has its starting 11 for 2014
DW Akademie is once again bringing young journalists together and this time they will be covering soccer. With Once Amigos, 22 young journalists from Latin America and Germany are gearing up for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. The innovative project will have them reporting on stories involving this major sporting event. You might think they’re like two international soccer teams: 11 journalists from Germany and 11 from Latin America. But the 22 journalists will in fact be working in mixed pairs during the two-year project.
The first of the project’s five modules was launched in Bonn in early December. After an introductory week with several excursions they practiced hands-on multimedia skills. They’ve since created a Once Amigos blog with the slogan, “Discovering the stories behind the ball – Brazil 2014”.
More than 200 Latin American journalists and numerous German journalists applied for this program financed by Germany’s Federal Foreign Office. The participants will meet up again in June in Brazil. Then at the end of 2013 each team will be researching in the home country of the Latin American teammate. During the World Cup itself, the teams will be reporting from various locations throughout Brazil.

Latin America
DW’s Distribution team continued its successful year in Latin America at Jornadas in Buenos Aires. With the new Spanish-language channel DW (Latinoamérica), DW representatives were able to work out agreements with more than 20 new partners from Argentina, Uruguay and Peru. The channel has been airing since February and is tailored to the Latin American market.
Asia
Metro TV is the first partner in Indonesia to be included in the DW series World Stories. Metro TV is a nationwide news channel that was launched 2000. Metro is broadcast from Jakarta with a network of 53 regional stations and reaches more than 3 million viewers throughout Indonesia. It is also available via cable and DTH. Metro has been broadcasting DW television programming since 2001.
Also in Indonesia, Banten TV has become the fifth partner to include the new DW series Inovator into its lineup.
Mobile
News feeds from DW will be integrated into the next generation of Lumia smartphones from Nokia that have Windows Phone 7 and 8. The news feeds will be pre-installed on the Reading app and available in English, German and Russian.
Baumhauer to highlight major changes at CANITEC
For the 12th year in a row, Deutsche Welle (DW) will be taking part in CANITEC in Acapulco, Mexico. DW’s Director of Strategy, Marketing and Distribution, Guido Baumhauer, will be attending the event and highlighting the major changes that DW has put in motion in 2012. DW has introduced a new channel featuring 20 hours of Spanish programming for Latin America and is continuing to focus on regional partnerships and coproductions to increase its presence in the region.
“We have also experienced a dramatic rise in our fan base in Latin America, where viewers are becoming more and more interested in our brand of pro-gramming – the European perspective of world issues and international trends,” says Baumhauer. “This all contributes to our recent success and increased viewership in Latin America.”
With Claves, DW is offering a new talk show that focuses on the special chal-lenges for Latin American countries in a globalized world. Hosted by Gonzalo Cáceres, this show is a collaboration with broadcasters throughout the region – like ARTV in Chile, SJRTV in Mexico and RTVC in Colombia. Baumhauer believes that this show in particular “really highlights DW’s successful partnerships and expansion in Latin America”.
DW has also created a good mix of experienced and young on-air personali-ties to bring life to the schedule – including Ana Plasencia, Carolina Chimoy and Paco Furio.
“We are especially looking forward to going to CANITEC to present our re-vamped new schedule and programming and our innovative new design,” says Baumhauer. “It has been very well received so far and we are sure that it will only add to our increased success in Latin America. We are excited about being able to receive direct feedback from viewers and partners alike.”
CANITEC is taking place in Acapulco, Mexico, from May 30 to June 1. Deutsche Welle will be participating as an exhibitor (Stand 102).
