DW has a new programming partner in Mexico. Since July, OPMA, has been broadcasting multiple DW programs every week on its flagship educational station, Canal 30. Global 3000, Enlaces, Europa en concierto, En Forma and Claves are among the programs that have been included. The cooperation is the result of successful negotiations with the Director General of OPMA, Armando Carillo Lavat, during this year’s Global Media Forum. Canal 30 is available nationwide in Mexico via major infrastructure providers like SKY and Cablevisión and can be received by an audience of over 80 million. Since it was founded in 2010, OPMA has been involved with DW and to date has acquired more than 500 programming hours from the DW- Transtel portfolio.
DW has expanded on multiple partnerships in Nigeria. The pay TV provider CONSAT is including DW in its basic programming package. The newly-founded provider is a part of the media group, Continental Broadcasting Service, based in Lagos. The group’s terrestrial broadcaster, TV Continental, is already a DW partner. On the radio, Brila FM, is acquiring sports news from DW Hausa for its new station in Kaduna. Brila’s soccer website also includes an English news feed from DW covering Bundesliga and other sports news. Also on the air are multiple DW magazines in English and Hausa being broadcast by Unity FM in Jos, a private station founded in 2013.
DW has a new IPTV and cable partner in Jakarta, Indonesia. Mora Quatro Multimedia (MQM) is now carrying DW in all five of its programming packages. MQM provides digital cable service to the Tangerang area and is available via IPTV nationwide in Indonesia. DW is also available to subscribers via a mobile TV app and is estimated to reach 10,000 subscribers by the end of the year.
Video on demand from DW is now available on Networkplay Media, a video portal from India that provides video to over 1,000 online publications.

The Forever Group have picked up 170 hours of DW Transtel programming. Myanmar’s largest media company and the country’s first Pay TV provider, chose a wide variety of programming to be broadcast on the Readers Channel, a free-to-air educational channel that encourages audiences to read more. This contract represents the largest volume of programming that has ever been sold by DW Transtel in Myanmar. The Forever Group has also been acquiring DW’s complete programming line-up since 2011.
Audiences all over Afghanistan can now watch DW’s Euromaxx, Arts.21 and Drive it on one the country’s leading television stations, OneTV (1-TV). This rapidly growing private broadcaster, newly founded by Afghani investors hoping to promote principals of human rights and freedom of speech, specializes in covering news and current affairs. It has a very good reputation in Afghanistan with a target audience of young, educated information seekers. On the Afghani TV popularity index, OneTV ranks third.
It’s primetime for DW in Uruguay as DW (Latinoamérica) grows more and more popular. The terrestrial broadcaster Río Uruguay TV is now a part-time programming partner broadcasting the DW formats Claves, Al volante and Visión futuro Sunday evenings from 8:00 to 10:00 pm. The broadcasting area covers the city of Fray Bentos and the province of Río Negro. Around 200,000 viewers can receive Río Uruguay TV and this new partnership features DW in the evening primetime slot.
DW has forged a new partnership in Lebanon. A memorandum of understanding was recently signed with the Lebanese Broadcasting Corporation (LBC Group) that is paving the way for cooperation with DW’s World Stories. The Lebanese broadcaster will soon be contributing segments to the successful DW show. DW is also confident that cooperation will be expanding in the near future to include program acquisitions from DW (Arabia). The Lebanese newspaper As-Safir has also begun to include full articles and video boxes from DW on its online platform. As-Safir is a pan-Arab publication with readers from all over the Arab world.
DW has also taken steps to increase its social media footprint in Iraq. The very popular news and social media site Shakwmakw, which boasts 430,000 Facebook fans, will soon be posting new links to selected DW articles on a daily basis. The website was started during the Iraqi civil war as an online forum with the goal of encouraging positive exchange and communication between Iraqis regardless of their religious or ethnic backgrounds. Another popular social media platform biraqi, with over 350,000 Facebook fans, has signed a cooperation agreement with DW and are integrating links and teasers into their online content.
The Kick off! Competition is now off and running in German, English, Spanish and Arabic – a great chance for soccer fans to show their knowledge of the German Bundesliga. DW is also now offering a free Tour of the German Parliament with a new multimedia project that takes you on an virtual tour of the plenary chamber in Berlin.

Baumhauer to highlight major changes at CANITEC
For the 12th year in a row, Deutsche Welle (DW) will be taking part in CANITEC in Acapulco, Mexico. DW’s Director of Strategy, Marketing and Distribution, Guido Baumhauer, will be attending the event and highlighting the major changes that DW has put in motion in 2012. DW has introduced a new channel featuring 20 hours of Spanish programming for Latin America and is continuing to focus on regional partnerships and coproductions to increase its presence in the region.
“We have also experienced a dramatic rise in our fan base in Latin America, where viewers are becoming more and more interested in our brand of pro-gramming – the European perspective of world issues and international trends,” says Baumhauer. “This all contributes to our recent success and increased viewership in Latin America.”
With Claves, DW is offering a new talk show that focuses on the special chal-lenges for Latin American countries in a globalized world. Hosted by Gonzalo Cáceres, this show is a collaboration with broadcasters throughout the region – like ARTV in Chile, SJRTV in Mexico and RTVC in Colombia. Baumhauer believes that this show in particular “really highlights DW’s successful partnerships and expansion in Latin America”.
DW has also created a good mix of experienced and young on-air personali-ties to bring life to the schedule – including Ana Plasencia, Carolina Chimoy and Paco Furio.
“We are especially looking forward to going to CANITEC to present our re-vamped new schedule and programming and our innovative new design,” says Baumhauer. “It has been very well received so far and we are sure that it will only add to our increased success in Latin America. We are excited about being able to receive direct feedback from viewers and partners alike.”
CANITEC is taking place in Acapulco, Mexico, from May 30 to June 1. Deutsche Welle will be participating as an exhibitor (Stand 102).

DW taking flight in Latin America
Deutsche Welle (DW) will be expanding its Spanish television service for Latin America from two to 20 hours daily, starting February 6, 2012. The new lineup for viewers between Mexico and Tierra del Fuego is part of a comprehensive reform process designed to reposition DW in the international media landscape. The expansion of the program for Latin America will significantly increase DW’s presence there.
DW officially announced the changes at the World Economic Forum in Davos on January 26. Mexican President Felipe Calderón said: “It is great to have a partner like Deutsche Welle broadcasting for 20 hours in Spanish. It opens up new opportunities in Latin America. The program will be a bridge to Europe, and Germany in particular. DW has seen success in the competitive television market in Latin America from day one. Around 850 partners throughout the region have included DW programming in their lineups so far – and negotiations with other partners are currently under way.
The new Spanish program required a lot of hard work and restructuring. A big change is in store for Gonzalo Cáceres, who has been a host for Journal and Cuadriga for years. His new job will be to manage and host Claves with partners on location. including ARTV in Chile, SJRTV in Mexico and RTVC in Colombia. The new show will focus on the latest issues in Latin America.
DW will also be welcoming several new faces – among them, Silvia Cabrera. She will be hosting Berlin poltico and Journal. According to Cabrera, DW has a lot to gain in Latin America by setting itself apart as a reliable, objective source of information.
Another addition is Paco Furio. Not only will he be the new producer and host for sports on Journal, but he will also help manage the magazines Reporteros en el mundo, PopXtra and Europa semanal.
“German punctuality and reliability is something that you can count on,” says Carolina Chimoy. The daughter of a Peruvian diplomat will be hosting Journal as well as Reporteros el mundo dazu.
The new Spanish program for Latin America will also receive support from a completely redesigned website for Spanish-speaking users. In the future, the editorial team will be made up of more than 130 employees.
