Market roundup: January 2013
Asia
DW has added to its range of mobile content in China by making “Jojo sucht das Glück” available on the Tudou Video app. The app provides smartphone users in China with video content and has been one of the most popular since its introduction to the Chinese market in 2010. “Jojo” is DW’s award-winning soap opera for those looking to learn German.
America
With Congeco, DW has added a new television partner in Ontario, Canada. The cable provider has included the German-language television channel in its line-up and offering it as part of a German package for viewers throughout Ontario and Quebec. DW (Amerika) was also added by six networks that are part of the Canadian Cable Systems Alliance (CCSA) – making it even more readily available to viewers in Ontario.
Europe
DW has expanded its cooperation with HRT. Croatian’s national TV station is integrating several new programs from DW into its lineup, including Global 3000, Tomorrow Today and Europe in Concert. In addition, HRT will start contributing to the DW series World Stories.
Online
DW has been lined up with other international broadcasters like BBC and Al Jazeera on Soundcloud’s World News section. DW has seen a lot of success over the past year on Soundcloud, which some have dubbed “YouTube for audio”. With the new categorization, DW’s English audio content will be even easier to find and listen to.
The DW Media Center has been expanded to offer programming in additional three languages: Bosnian, Serbian and Croatian.
DW Akademie has its starting 11 for 2014
DW Akademie is once again bringing young journalists together and this time they will be covering soccer. With Once Amigos, 22 young journalists from Latin America and Germany are gearing up for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. The innovative project will have them reporting on stories involving this major sporting event. You might think they’re like two international soccer teams: 11 journalists from Germany and 11 from Latin America. But the 22 journalists will in fact be working in mixed pairs during the two-year project.
The first of the project’s five modules was launched in Bonn in early December. After an introductory week with several excursions they practiced hands-on multimedia skills. They’ve since created a Once Amigos blog with the slogan, “Discovering the stories behind the ball – Brazil 2014”.
More than 200 Latin American journalists and numerous German journalists applied for this program financed by Germany’s Federal Foreign Office. The participants will meet up again in June in Brazil. Then at the end of 2013 each team will be researching in the home country of the Latin American teammate. During the World Cup itself, the teams will be reporting from various locations throughout Brazil.

A three-hour live TV show will be broadcast on CBN on December 31. It will also air a 24-hour video live stream on the topic in cooperation with online partners YouKu and BestTV. CBN belongs to the Shanghai Media Group and reaches an estimated audience of over 600 million viewers in China and beyond.
Recognition for “max x”
A Euromaxx segment has been given recognized by the Accolade Competition. At the end of November, the strange world of max x was given an Award of Excellence in the “comedy series” category. With max x, DW has found a clever way to dissect modern society. Sometimes he has to wrestle with the technical pitfalls of his mobile phone, and other times it only takes a folding chair to drive him crazy. He’s just a normal guy trying to cope with the challenges of modern life.
New content and platforms on display in Singapore
DW representatives are in Singapore this week for the Asia TV Forum (ATF). Along with promoting television content from DW Transtel, DW will also be highlighting the launch of its new presence on Mediapeers (content.dw-transtel.de). The mediapeers exchange allows distributors of audiovisual content to manage, showcase, license, distribute and bill their programs to professional buyers worldwide, including TV channels, home video distributors, cable operators, VoD services, airlines, websites and publishing houses.
Art Beats is among the DW Transtel content that is being highlighted in Singapore. It’s a series that celebrates the unsung heroes of culture; street musicians and graffiti artists, samba and tango virtuosos, masters of caricature and satire and their power to unite nations and peoples.
ATF continues until December 7. DW is at stand F14.
