Looking for future journalists in Kano
DW is in Nigeria this week looking for extraordinary journalistic talent. Under the motto “Social media: a challenge for journalism”, Germany’s international broadcaster developed a contest to award the best up-and-coming journalists in Kano. Entries were received as both audio reports and articles.
This project represents more than three and a half years of cooperation with Freedom Radio in Nigeria. It is also the first time that Deutsche Welle has worked with Bayero University.
Winners will be chosen by a jury made up of experts from DW’s partners Freedom Radio and Freedom Express, the faculty from the Department of Mass Communications at the Bayero University, and an independent journalist. The award ceremony will also feature a podium discussion about the impact of social media on Nigerian journalism in the future.
Input wanted for Coming Home on DW-TV
You only miss it, when it’s gone. Your homeland. But what is it? Is it a country? A feeling? Watch our series “Coming Home” and tell us what “home” means to you!
In our series “Coming Home”, DW accompanies people as they make their way home. Their personal road movies will shed light on the aspects of life that they have found in Germany – and what they have missed. People have different ideas and different opinions about what “home” means. We want to know what you associate with your “homeland”. We will be publishing them at dw-world.de/cominghome.
UPDATE: The contest is over and a selection of entries have been published at dw-world.de/cominghome.
eLearning Age Award for Community D
DW’s language courses have once again been recognized for quality – this time at the eLearning Age Award 2011. Community D was awarded a prize for “Best Use of Social Media for Learning”. The annual awards were presented for the seventh time in London last week by Bizmedia Ltd, publisher of the trade magazine e.learning age. The jury chose from approximately 250 submissions from 20 countries and awarded prizes in 16 categories. Community D offers German students a great way to meet each other and exchange information and tips about the German language online.
New coproduction for Central Europe
Deutsche Welle has expanded its television services in Central Europe by making a magazine covering European issues available to partners. Individual features will be taken from Deutsche Welle’s magazine “Europa Aktuell” and additional shows on DW-TV and adapted into the regional language. Regional-specific content – like press reviews and interviews – is produced especially for inclusion in the weekly broadcast.
In Kosovo, “Europe Today” will be broadcast by the leading public broadcaster RTK starting November 24. On December 7, the Croatian version will go on-air with Kanal Z1 and be broadcast every Wednesday. TVR Info in Bucharest started broadcasting the 26-minute show on October 1. “Euro Box” is shown there nationwide on Saturdays. The hosts for the new shows include Lindita Arapi (Albanian), Srecko Matic (Croatian) and Lavinia Pitu (Romanian).
DW expands in India with Doordarshan
DW has signed an agreement with Doordarshan (DD), the television division of Prasar Bharati, the Broadcasting Corporation of India. This agreement outlines the areas of cooperation, including coproduction, training, joint events and the broadcasting of selected DW-TV and DW-TransTel programs on Doordarshan’s network. DW and DD will also enter into a detailed agreement on the exchange of television programming in the areas of science and technology with Tomorrow Today, lifestyle with euromaxx and global issues, personalities and events with Global 3000.
In addition, DW-AKADEMIE will provide training for DD’s staff, focusing on advanced broadcasting techniques, program production, technology and management.
Deutsche Welle has been expanding its services in India for many years, and this new agreement marks another milestone in these efforts. The agreement was signed in Delhi on November 5th by the Director General of Doordarshan, Tripurari Sharan and Erik Bettermann, Director General of Deutsche Welle.
