Deutsche Welle remembers the Berlin Wall

On August 13, 1961, communist East Germany began building the Berlin Wall, dividing Germany for decades. To mark the 50th anniversary of this event, Deutsche Welle will be broadcasting live from the memorial service to be held in Berlin on August 13 – starting at 8:00 UTC. Guests for the live broadcast will include the Federal President of Germany, Christian Wulf, Representative of the Federal Government for Culture, Bernd Neumann, the Mayor of Berlin, Klaus Wowereit and historian Freya Klier.

In addition, DW has produced three documentaries surrounding the Wall’s construction, as well as a range of features and online content. The three documentaries will examine different facets of the Wall’s existence and be shown as part of DW-TV’s In Focus series. The Short Life of Chris Gueffroy, about the 20-year-old whose death in 1989 became synonymous with death along the Wall. The Berlin Wall will show how people lived in the divided city of Berlin. And The Lindenberg File tells the story of Udo Lindenberg’s campaign to perform a concert in East Germany that lasted eight years.

GLOBAL 3000 breaks into Russian TV market

Global 3000 on DW-TV

For the first time, one of DW’s shows was broadcast on free TV in Russia. GLOBAL 3000 – DW’s program on the environment and globalization – will be broadcast on Friday evenings on RBC TV, with re-runs on Saturdays and Sundays. The broadcaster is promoting the new show online and during its daily line-up on air.

For the Russian version of GLOBAL 3000, DW delivers a specially-edited, 21-minute long version – optimized for RBC TV. The Russian channel is the leader in business and informational programming and can be seen in more than 600 cities in Russia. DW and RBC TV have been working together since May – GLOBAL 3000 was broadcast for the first time by RBC on July 22.

Latin America
DW has signed a contract with SKY Mexico – the largest pay TV provider in Mexico with 3.3 million subscribers. SKY Mexico also covers areas of Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Honduras, Guatemala and Nicaragua. DW-TV is included in a the “World & Culture” package with other international broadcasters.

This is just one of the contracts that DW signed while at the Canitec in Mexico – one of the most important trade shows for cable television in the region. Others include new partnerships with Capital 21 (Mexico City), Sicom (Puebla) and RTV Veracruz (Xalapa) who are incorporating the Spanish television service as well as audio and online content.

Europe
DW-TV is now in the digital television program from Salzburg AG. Deutsche Welle will now be available to more than 120,000 subscribers in the state of Salzburg, Austria, across the entire cable network of Salzburg AG.
