An inspiring new novel about the lives of Cambodian women, “Diving Deep, Going Far”, is one of the first to depict life as woman in the kingdom. It follows the lives of four young women – Nary, Nika, Soklin, and Ratana – who struggle to break free from cultural oppression and patriarchy, but triumph as they pass on the torch to the following generation.

In an interview with DW, Indian feminist V. S. Elizabeth says that although the global #MeToo movement had an impact on India, it is still restricted to the educated middle class with an access to the Internet.

When I first moved to Australia, almost three years ago, I had a completely different notion of women’s freedom, rights awareness, status at work and at home, and why not? It was the first time I was living permanently in a first-world country, moreover in the country with the highest human index for years in a row. I had to have expectations of a freer world for women.

The women’s marches in January were largely held to protest Trump, but also follow in the footsteps of feminists through the ages. We look at women who’ve fought for equality.
