Transmongolian: the beauty queen breaking barriers

Make-up artist Solongo Batsukh competing in the Miss Universe Mongolia competition in Ulaanbaatar, the capital of Mongolia. Though she fell short of representing her country at the Miss Universe contest in Thailand on December 17, her participation shed another light onto a group living on the edges of a deeply patriarchical country with conservative views about sexual orientation.

“I am healed now” says newly-male police constable

‘I am enough for myself,’ says Irha Parishei, a transgender woman

Irha Parishei is a transgender woman who is currently pursuing an engineering degree at NUST University. She has taken it upon herself to challenge the many ugly stereotypes about the transgender community. She works with Pakistan’s National Commission for Human Rights (NCHR) to raise awareness and has met various politicians. She shared some of her experiences and the challenges she faces in an interview with DW.

Transgender participation in Pakistan’s elections

The Elections Act 2017 passed by Pakistani parliament in 2017 encouraged transgender people to vote and also to contest in elections. Five transgender candidates took up the challenge, running successful, albeit losing, political campaigns.

In 2012 an Indian student was violently raped on a moving bus in Delhi and died of horrific internal injuries. Leslee Udwin spoke to one of the rapists on death row while spending two years making a documentary about the case, “India’s Daughter”.
